    Nasty,

If you are intending to "move this system on", Either by a sale or donation, you would be better off letting the system upgrade to Windows 10.

There is nothing wrong with anyone such as yourself making a personal decision to remain with an older OS, and I have always defended a user's right to do so. However that is unlikely to be the choice of the majority of potential customers, Windows 10 has been the De Facto Standard for almost five years now, and is what people would expect to see on a system they were buying or acquiring. the upgrade to 10 is still free and would be likely to make the system worth more when sold.

In the end it's your choice, but second user sales will always be a buyers market, except in the case of antiques and specialist rarities

I can't disagree with that, but I had it sold but couldn't meet the guy because of family health issues. And where I live the market is flooded with used Windows 10 machines. And it's less work for me haha, 8.1 is already on it! 8 is fast and has no issues with forced updates, upgrades and drivers.

What I'd do in this situation is to download an installer, direct from Microsoft and include it with the sale, it's up to the buyer if the do anything about it

OR just point the buyer to here ...

Nigel, people are so cheap here all they want is to talk you down as much as possible. If they want windows 10 they can go elsewhere. I've put hours of work into used computers for sale and people don't want to pay me 30.00us for them, they are cheap. The market is flooded here with tons of old business computers with 10 on them, junk. I test all components before donating or sale, and clean them out real well, but they don't care, they want junk I guess.

Anyhow the issue is all fixed and it will be sold to the next bidder that meets the very fair price.
