    hmmm

    Cannot install updates-install.jpg

"from that point onward any machine using it will turn permenantly non genuine"

Can never be activated? Or would require reinstall?

Well, a lot of reading and I'm on the fence regarding that update. A slight consensus is do not install, and if it's installed uninstall it; at the other end is "install it and if nothing bad happens leave it alone" (I do not like "if", especially when there are many posts of valid windows installs being rendered non-genuine by this update and requiring phone calls to MS to clear up).

I am also thoroughly confused by:

    slmgr -xpr showing "permanently activated"

    but

slmgr -dlv showing "licensed" and "rearm count: 5"

It seems "permanently" and "rearm count" contradict each other, which do I believe?

Should I remove this key and try for a refund, then seek a different key elsewhere?

    Hi

    PLEASE install kb971033
(ensuring the services/status's i spoke of are running/allowed)
it should negate the errors i spoke of in my last post

then as i said reboot x2 rerun mgadiag, post the results

its not very helpful if you dont do what we ask, were trying to help you but you keep putting blocks up

the rearm option is common to all installs generally 3 for most licences, msdn has allways been 5
its purely a backup......(and in a genuine install is totally irrelevant)

    I am leery of this.

Allow me to digress. I have never bought, nor will I ever buy, a game from Steam; and I have not purchased from EA/Origin or Ubi in years. For the simple reason they insist on installing several hundred meg of "management software" along with the game, the sole purpose of which is to "phone home" periodically or, worse, every time the game is started. Unless a game is multiplayer there is no acceptable reason for this, and I find the practice abhorrent and an absolute dealbreaker.

Now, to the case at hand. Everything I read about 971033 tells me it is basically MS snoopware, which will make my OS phone home every 90 days. If I purchased a new system with Win7 and heard of this "feature", I would instantly be online seeking how to disable or remove it. So ... why should I install this? What benefit would I gain that would offset having my computer reporting to MS every three months? Would your purpose in me installing it be met if it is uninstalled the next day?

I appreciate all the assistance, this thread has been most informative. However, i like to know why I should or shouldn't do something; so ask questions rather than blindly follow instructions. Not argumentative, just a desire to understand.

That's MS for you. Leave useless stuff around to obfuscate the issue. (So this Win7 is "permanently activated" and I'm not going to turn it on one day to see "30 days to activate"?)

Well, sorry for a 17 page ordeal (though I learned a lot). I ran the latest Simplix update and now, apparently, have a fully updated, activated, genuine Win7 SP1. I was able to install Malwarebytes and my VPN (the latter complained of not finding three updates, but when I let it "install" them, each produced a "not applicable to the system" popup). Now, if I ever have to reinstall will I have to undergo this ordeal again?- install Win7 Ultimate from my bogus disk- repair install from the Win7 Pro SP1 iso- add product key- install SimplixIs there some way to streamline this? (In all probability this is my last 32 bit system, but it will continue for online use until it is dead.)My gratitude to all who contributed to this project (hope all got a good laugh from someone still tinkering with this antique hardware); I'd certainly have had no success without you.
