Microsoft is Changing my service from off to automatic

Hello fellow members. I have a weird situation where Microsoft is changing my service from off to automatic and using control panel Microsoft Updates which had been turned off they turned it back to automatic. I find this as a violation of my rights and this has never happened until Dec 31 2021. It continues and was hoping there is a fix for this very annoying situation.

    Cheers

Well Microsoft beat me as they turned on computer mange service's windows update to automatic while control panel M$ update was still turned off by me. I haven't a clue how they can turn something one when I had already turned it off! I'm at a loss so please help this old man resolve this issue. Thanks again reading my rant.

    Hi

just did a little test, with my Updates gui, changed it from Never to check but do not download
    It confirmed my suspicions
Windows Updates does NOT require a restart to impliment these changes
and as W7 has reached EOL MS has no reason to change these settings

in the screenshot you posted the "program" requesting the change is Microsoft Windows
Thats a rather generic title, and therefor could relate to anything
I would run a full AV scan on your system
if you want to double up on that then run this, and post in thier forum

@torchwood I appreciate your reply but first off I'm 72 years old been dealing with computers since 1990 well before there was a so called Internet and yes my screen shot was pitiful, yet I could upload a screen shot of the service turned off Windows Update along with control panel Windows Update! I have Hitman Pro which scans before anything else takes place. I also use Malwarebytes adwcleaner_8.3.1.exe along with Avast Premium Security so I think that those are enough to keep me clean. I'm not going to websites where one can catch a virus or a rolled up trojan that must be executed to really do harm ie: wipe out ones OS. I have image backups of my OS by MiniTool Shadow Maker & imho is one of the best backups I've ever used. All the other backups take tons of storage space where MT SM is about 85megs & when installed takes up about 200 megs. My backups are on average around 18K in change and it takes about 2 minutes for a full backup.
Again torchwood I due thank you for your reply and guidance but as stated above I'm not making this stuff up. I've never encountered anything like this in all my years 30years of computing so I'm just baffled as much as I'm sure you are.

After doing a lot of searching on the net I found that wuauclt.exe in system32 is one culprit that keeps turning on windows update under manage services which I've turned off enough times that my brain is fried. I tried in safe mode to either rename it or delete it but a message popped up saying something about TrustedInstaller which at this point I need someone to help me stop this nightmare. TrustedInstaller.exe is a process of Windows Modules Installer service in Windows 11/10/8/7/Vista. Its main function is to enable installation, removal, and modification of Windows Updates and optional system components. I think what is happening is Microsoft is dumping updates for 7 10 11 all at the same time but of course only to those pertaining to those OS's.. I don't want there stupid updates and given the fact that windows 7 has been dead since 2015 why now I ask myself. All I can say is there are 2 security roll ups for 7 which I don't want nor need. Sorry for ranting but if anyone can suggest how to get rid of wauclt.exe please share your expertise!
    cheers mates :)

    Hi Duster,

Allthough W7 has turned EOL, extended support is still available, and they are STILL providing updates for those who have paid for it, ESU.. Having said this ordinary users still receive updates for MSE, if you use it, and >>everyone<< gets offered via windows updates -- MSRT (kb8900380) on monthly cycle.

Trusted Installer is MS's highest privaledge level and controls everything run under System
You can take control of it I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend this

A better option would be to dissable the BITS local service. Background Intelligence Transfer Service
its a dependency for windows updates to run

Im only 65 but i was messing around with Cobal programming 40 years ago,

    Hello torchwood,
Thanks again for your reply. I would never try and use Trustedinstaller as it would create nothing but chaos. I hadn't thought of BITS so I have now disabled it and hopefully that will end the frustration between the Microsoft bot and mo.
torchwood don't going puffing out your chest just because your 65! You sir have more hairs on your chest than I do!

Under service settings change startup type to disabled. That should do it. Also under the dependencies tab check if anything is under the section "The following components depend upon the service." I don't have anything under it but I'm running 8.1. I don't have immediate access to a 7 computer atm.

If the service as you spoke of was set to off, then an applied update turned it right back on again. If it wasn't an update, it was something you ran that did it.

I turn the service off myself, and it's NEVER been re enabled behind my back. In fact, I have to turn it on if I want to install a specific update. Then I turn it right back off again.

If the service is being turned on again and again after PC reboot, I'd have to investigate. It might be something running in the background doing it.

Never mind. Read your post above. It's apparently wuauclt.exe.

Then again, disabling the service should tell it to stop executing. So there's something more here.

OP never said that he disabled it. Only stopped it.

I found a link that now has completely shut down Microsoft's Windows Update. Here is the link that gave me the relief of winning the battle over violating my rights imho over what I've stated in this thread.

Windows 7: How can I get permission to turn off automatic updates? - Super User

I used only Group Policy and used by c&p made a reg file ran it and no more Windows Updates. Thanks to all the members who responded as I'm humbled but grateful for all of you. I'm bad..sorry but my mistake entering link.
    cheers
