windows update won't acknowledge changes after some manual installs

    Hi there.
if I install a driver manually via the pnputil.exe program, for example: pnputil -a smbusamd.inf
and then set windows update to check for updates, it doesn't acknowledge that the driver has been installed, it still says that there are 55 important updates remaining to download instead of 54.
if I choose to install the driver manually, How do I get windows update to observe the installation of this driver so that it doesn't appear on the list?
    Thanks.

It's totally reasonable that you get the very same updates after installing a driver. After all, Windows Update only shows...... updates for Windows.
Drivers don't even appear in there (and those that might appear are often the default MS driver that's generally very limited functions).

Normal drivers for the rest of hardware aren't sent by MS though its update chanels naturally, so installing one manually wouldn't have an effect on the update list. Only if you download and manually install a normal Windows update you'll see the update list shrink by one, with the manually installed update dissapearing.

I'm assuming the above post to be true or perhaps you're missing the manifest file...
