Frustrated with Windows Update

First of all, I am sorry if this is in the wrong place, and if this question has already been answered elsewhere, but I am tired of searching. I have been trying for quite a while to make my Windows Update work properly, but everything I have read about other people's experiences has not helped one iota. I will try to give as much information as I can think of, but if more is needed just let me know and I will get back with it shortly.

Windows Update started to give me issues several months ago when I tried to shut it down and it attempted to install updates. 2 days later, it was still stuck on update 2 of 17. Literally, I let it run for TWO freaking days. I used my computer's reset switch and finally got it to boot back into windows. I tried to install the updates manually, and it stuck again on the first update this time. I have since tried to stop and restart the update service several times (that is the only advice I could find for these issues on the net). I looked into some of the updates that are installed, and I saw several Office 2007 updates. I do not have Office 2007, but instead Office 2000. I think these might be causing some of the issues, because it is an Office update it keeps getting hung up on, I think, because it just says "1 of 10" or whatever. Now, I cannot even uninstall old updates that I think are causing problems because it says there is another installation running...I cannot seem to locate any running installations. I also cannot install other programs, presumably for the same reason. I guess the main issue that really needs looked into is how do I find this supposed installation that is going on and how do I kill it? If I can do that, I might be able to uninstall the updates and nip any future ones in the bud, thus solving the problem(hopefully).

Have you tried a system restore before this happened?

Windows 7 starter

I've had similar issues with updates. Seems to take over your computer. I had to shut down and re start then and do a system restore then go and shut off automatic updates. Only allow the update you select. You have that option.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit SP1

Download 'Process Explorer', so you can see which process is running the install, then shut it down (kill it)

Sorry I took so long getting back to you all, been busy...I completely forgot about the use of the system restore function, so I used it and now I have Windows Update ask me before it installs anything. My problems seem to have been fixed. Thank you everyone
