Stop windows updating a specific driver

Ok firstly a massive thanks to this forum.

Had random BSOD on a fresh 7 install, managed to use the debugging tool, find that it was the audio driver causing the issue and install manufacturers.

Went from 4 reboots per day to 0.

Until last night when it rebooted.

I check the device and it had reverted to the Microsoft drivers (previously realtek).

How can I stop windows updating that device?

Hello Daniel, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can set Windows Update to not automaticaly download and install your updates, and just do it manually. Plus, you can hide the Windows Update that you do not want to use until the next time there is a new version of it available.

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

    Thanks for the answers;

I had already turned off windows update...but... that's not really what I want to do, I want windows to automatically update, but not that specific device.

    Daniel,

With Windows Update set to automatically download and install updates, you can't block a specific driver. You can set the Devices and Printers Installation settings to like this below to not install any drivers automatically and still have your other Windows 7 updates install though. You would just need to manually install the drivers you want then.

Ok, wondered if I could somehow fake the date on the driver so it was always newer, but to be honest it's not that big of a deal.

Again massive thanks to the forum for helping me fix the blue screen issue, it's caused me all sorts of ear ache with the missus (that uses pc more than I do these days).

Are you talking about the automated driver install that occurs before you get a chance to install the drivers manually yourself when you reboot windows ? If so then this is how you stop that from happening.

       Note
Go to Start > Search > (Type in) gpedit.msc > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions > (Right Click) Prevent Installation of Devices not described by other policy settings > Edit > Select ENABLED

Note: This will need to be set back to NOT CONFIGURED before proceeding with the new driver installation or you may get errors during the installation.
