Windows 7: New Update Killed Internet

New Update Killed Internet

EDIT : Ignore this thread, it turned out to be Malware

Hi All,

Sorry for the lack of information here - but last night I updated my computer and my internet stopped working. Still could get IP etc, but internet would not work.

Used system restore (for the first time ever and was impressed by 7 doing it well as I heard lots of bad things with XP) and went back 2 days and all was fine... 10 minutes later, it died again - it had auto updated.

I tested it again and sure enough it died after the updates.

I am unsure which update it was, there was 2 - one was a IE8 update and one was a Windows 7 compatability update. I am not at home right now so I cannot be sure.

FYI my system is;
core i5 750, 4gb DDR3 1333, Gigabyte P55-UD3
64 bit windows 7

Only just installed it last week, so it was all up to date except those 2 updates, which means it is a recent update (26 or 27 january)

Sorry for not having all the info - Just wanted to give a heads up if anyone else sees the issue. I will try to get more info tonight if I have time.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

I am not a believer in automatic updates. I have mine set to notify me of updates. When I am notified I select custom install. That way I can control what is on my computer.

You can install one of the updates and work with your computer a while to see if the problem occurs. If it does, you have foaund the culprit. Roll back to a previous restore point and don't install it. If your computer is OK, try installing the other update and see what happens.

Hi - Windows 7 Ultimate 64 but RTM is what I have.

I am quite confused however. It was a problem again this afternoon, even though I had turne off auto updates. So maybe it was a co-incidence.

I have restored back a few days again and turned off auto updates, however it says in the windows update history that it has been installed...but if I try to remove it, it is not in the add/remove updates list....Seems system restore misses bits?

The update causing the problem is either;

update : Looks like it was not the update, it was just a coincidence that the same time it was installed some malware got through. This happened on 3 occasions so I assumed it was the update.

So ignore my ramblings :)

Windows 7 Ultimate x64

As the original poster said, this turned out to be a malware issue.

With regards to automatic updates, I've used them for years and I've rarely experienced a problem because of an update. A system restore point or an image based backup could easily put me back if something really did wreak havoc...but thus far it's been pretty darn painless.
