Right. I read monkey's post as completely disabled although he could have meant this.

For the OP I beleive this would be the best as they can hide the ones that are currently availible and this setting would prevent future ones from automatically being intalled allowing him the chance to hide them.
I have to agree with you. But, if you think about i,t really is no right or wrong way. Everyone is different; what makes them feel good is the right way for them.

My anti-virus, Eset Smart Security also notifies me of Windows Updates. Since I do run the anti-virus at all times, I see no reason to run Windows Update automatically. So it all depends on your situation I guess. When I update manually I do not install stuff I do not need, for example Windows Live stuff.

I actually have my Windows Update set to notify me but I pick and choose the updates to install.

One question I do have is how do I disable Defender in 7? In Vista I got it though the Security Center but there is no Security Center any more and I can't seem to find Defender in the Control Panel.

The easiest way, go to help and support in start menu. Then type in defender. You will see easy instructions to turn if off.

i meant disable windows defender. there is no reason to have it running in the background when you have third party solutions running.

I know it is and don't want to take up valuable and limited hard drive space for Microsoft to tell me what I already know. I would like to set Windows Update some how so that it doesn't keep bugging me to install these important updates, is that possible?

I have never seen a update for checking if win7 is genuine?? i also have a netbook that has very limited hard drive so would like to have it check but then remove. Does anyone know the name of this update?
I looked on my main machine and didnt see it on there ether but its on auto update so maybe i missed it.

Why does MS not categorize MSE definition updates as important??
I have been meaning to post about this for some time. I don't understand why MS categorizes Microsoft Security Essentials updates as "optional". These should be rated important or critical. Is everyone else using MSE experiencing this also - Or am I missing something in my update settings?
