Thanks for the link, got it installed now,i see no problems with this, and i personally dont blame microsoft for wanting to protect their windows and users, infact i support it,people who dont install this must have a reason and for them that dont install it,if it does come with sp1 later then unless you dont want security fixes and a safe stable operating system then im afraid you will be left out in the cold.

Mine hasn't come through Windows Update yet either, I had four yesterday and one today which was the browser choice update, along with the usual MSE def updates.

I'm not worried by it and also think Microsoft has every right to protect it's software, they are a company after all and have to pay their employees, they can't do that if everyone steals their products.

Mine showed up this tuesday, automatically unselected. They may be doing a staggered rollout to check for problems. I installed it and no trouble so far.

What good is this for a legal consumer?

How does this help my pc run better?

    What am I missing here?

If someone was to steal your legit key and tries to use it.

I guess it would possibly protect you in this situation.

    It doesn't.

It's copy protection, just like all games and most other more expensive software has.

Marketing may try to spin some thin ideas about protecting you from being ripped off by system integrators with pirated copies but in reality it's just plain old copy protection.

If people would simply stop stealing things just because, well we woldn't need locks on our houses or keys for our cars...

IMHO I think it's a bad way to go actually. If they managed to actually get a 100% lock on all copies I think in 5-10years they'd be out of the OS buisness myself. It just gives people a reason to use something else and get used to it (even though it does suck mightily). After a while why go back? Your now used to having less, the search crashes every time you use it, It's ugly as sin, but it's free. Well they've just lost a costomer (or a million) for life at that point.

That Star Wars quote of Lea to Darth sums it up pretty well

If someone hasn't paid for their operating system in the first place, they haven't lost anything, as their was never going to be any revenue to be had in the first place.
