Tried to install it again with no noticeable changes. Would be nice if M$ at least provided a place you could check for troubleshooting purposes.
Have you not checked your browsers plugins, as it shows up in Firefox.
Didn't have firefox installed on my laptop. Didn't notice any changes to IE 8...

Then you can help me collect the data I need for my next attempt at installing it.

First I need to know if it shows up in your IE8 addons? (screenshot?) If it shows up in your hotfix list? Anything else that will help to identify if it's installed just in case it messes up on my test PC that I'm currently in the process of building...

only way to tell is though firefox, and by running the test online. if it says you are ligit, then you have it installed.

Guys, the update doesn't get it's release on WU until 02/23/2010. It has only been available recently as a manual download off their site. As for the update itself...there are already reports of it flagging legit systems. Your best bet is to turn off AUTOMATIC updates then manually search for the update (KB971033) and hide it. I predict this is going to be a nightmare for MS and they're going to have to pull the update.

Besides it's already been hacked. Nice job MS. Even if they decided to release it with SP1 how long does one think it will be before someone sifts it out then uploads the SP for download without WAT. In TWO words: Not long.

Talk about alienating your customers. To finally put out an OS that rivals XP only to bring old problems back.

Think of all the OEM serials out there that were leaked...this is going to cause A LOT of issues for legit customers not to mention problems for MS.

No, just tried it, but it doesn't appear like it does in Firefox, but that is just with running the online tool here - Genuine Microsoft Software.

It wouldn't show up in IE because it can query the Windows Update 'WUWebControl' and 'MUWebControl' directly and their hard-coded into Internet Explorer not to show up as an addon.

It also installs a new service called "Windows Activation Technologies Service"
