Update: I did some exploring and KB971033 does show up in System Information for Windows (sysinternals); it does not show up in Unistall Updates. I will do more exploring.
At any rate, it did not give me a false positive.

Just a question, does this update only check the activation or will it check it for some programs too? I just want to know how far it goes.
Installed it on a fresh install of Home Premium x64 OEM along with other updates - no issues.
Just got a bunch of new updates today in windows update, still no Activation update yet..
IT rule #437
NEVER install unnecessary patches until you are confident they wont bone up the system.
Needless to say..I've read about false positives. I'm not interested in an MS flub up bringing down my organizations machines.
Security? Criticals? Compatibility patches? Thats what I'm more concerned about.
Maintaining MS's revenue stream and phoning home? Not so much.
I run an enterprise box at work..Ya..I patched it..it was ok..but I'm not letting it into the wild on any other test machines...yet...or ever.
Just my .02
It's probably cause MS is afraid of me I guess :P
That or it's actually like what Carl said, they are testing it on a bunch of 7 users before the full release, but how could MS test a software without the user's permission!! It's true that they gave you the choice to install it or not, but they (probably) never said in the update description that they are testing it on your pc!! Or did they??
I don't think it is as much of a test of the code (as in a beta test) as it is a test of consumer reaction. Maybe there a legal reasons for releasing it in the US first - as a voluntary thing.
