If you don't have a previous OS installed, you need to buy the full version.

If you don't have a previous OS on your 5 machines, you will need to buy 5 full copies.

Hang on here? 5 Computers but can't afford the price of an upgrade to Win 7?
Don't upgrade. That's the easy answer.......M$ ain't a charitable trust.
What are you running on all 5 PC's that need Win 7?
What a bumma' I can't get Win 7 to run on my 800 laptop without buying a licence. Go figure?

When you bought the first PC did the other 4 come free? Don't think so !!!

This is the best deal, no longer offered by MS but apparently copies remaining from here:

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack Upgrade Version For 3 Users by Office Depot

You don't need Ultimate if you aren't using Bitlocker or hosting Remote Desktop.

MS policy has always been buy one license per computer.
There are a lot of urban legends such as "you can have it installed on two computers, you just can't use them both at the same time, etc." or other BS like that.

Microsoft, as well as other companies..have just sharpened their skills when it comes to knowing how many times a product has been activated and/or how many different computers you've installed it on.

As said, volume licensing is available to corporate customers...not home end users.
Legitimate students are often offered deep discounts on Microsoft Products as well...

Asking Microsoft to give you one Key/Serial to work on 5 different computers is like you taking your car key out to a parking lot and expecting it to open 5 different vehicles and let you get in and drive them....
Just ain't happenin'.

You don't need Ultimate if you aren't using Bitlocker or hosting Remote Desktop.
Or if you don't use / need language packs.
