Second guessing what you are saying >

    One idea
If an update/install-loops like you say but won't load the rest, could be coz the driver m/soft recommend from their servers is an older date than what is already on your system(Win 7 refuses to load it) - it happened to me and my ancient motherboard.

The solution is to hide the recommended update so the others will load or delete the driver running on your PC and have Win 7 completely remove the driver(you have to tick a box)

The install and following ones should hopefully load.

What antivirus/firewall are you running? Turn them off for the updates!

Can't help you with Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode coz I haven't run it yet due to no support from my ancient CPU's!

Failing that, I would back-up wanted data to another drive, quick reformat and reinstall Windows 7

Well I managed to make it go back the log off instead of shut down. But it didn't install the updates. I'm currently using AVG antivirus 9.0 Free Edition and have windows firewall. I'll shut em down and restart it as I go to bed.

On a side note I cannot do a backup because my external hdd has not been working with this computer. It works with my laptop that has windows 7 home starter installed. This computer has been nothing but trouble since installing 7. Yes I did do a clean install and everything as well.

I guess if I make a new partition I could do a backup to it. How big are backups usually? I've never really payed attention... I guess I could back up the laptop and see. Side note I have 127 GB free of 193 so I have 66 GB taken up by 7. I guess taking about 30 would be sufficient, I assume the backup's are compressed.

Even if this works I'll do a clean install. This computer has been nothing but trouble since I installed windows 7 so hopefully it will change if I re-install.

I may also take this time to switch to 64 bit windows. If I backup on 32bit and clean install 64 bit, will I be able to use the backup?

You can reinstall Windows update agent.

How to obtain the latest version of the Windows Update Agent to help manage updates on a computer

    For an x86-based computer
    Collapse this imageExpand this image

Download the windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe package now. (http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x86.exe)

    For an x64-based computer
    Collapse this imageExpand this image

Download the windowsupdateagent30-x64.exe package now. (http://download.windowsupdate.com/wi...gent30-x64.exe)

I've done this before with Win 7.

Always create a system restore before installing anything.

    My suggestions:

    1.Empty folders C:\Windows\Servicing\SQM and C:\Windows\WinSxS\Temp

to do that you have to overcome permissions to these folders:

-.Takeowenrship each folder and add your account to have full control
-.Remove all files and subfolders from C:\Windows\Servicing\SQM and C:\Windows\WinSxS\Temp
-.Restore original permissions for both folders:remove your account from permissions to both folders and restore ownership back to "NT Service\TrustedInstaller"

    We'll see if this works...

The last resort is to re-install Win 7. The easiest way is to have an extra hard drive. Install the new drive. Install Win 7. Copy data over from old drive to new drive. I know you want to figure out whats going on but it's time to bite the bullet and move on.
