Implementing PEAP-MS-CHAP v2 authentication for Microsoft PPTP VPNs.

    Introduction:
Microsoft Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol version 2 (MS-CHAP v2) is a password-based authentication protocol which is widely used as an authentication method in PPTP-based (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) VPNs. Microsoft cautions that any organizations that use MS-CHAP v2 without encapsulation in conjunction with PPTP tunnels for VPN connectivity are running in a potentially nonsecure configuration.
    Recommendations:
Microsoft suggests that organizations using MS-CHAP v2/PPTP implement the Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP) in their networks. This mitigates this technique by encapsulating the MS-CHAP v2 authentication traffic in TLS.

Microsoft Security Advisory: Update for minimum certificate key length.

    Introduction:
To reduce the risk of unauthorized exposure of sensitive information, Microsoft has released a nonsecurity update (KB 2661254) for all supported versions of Microsoft Windows. This update will block cryptographic keys that are less than 1024 bits long. This update does not apply to Windows 8 Release Preview or Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate because these operating systems already include the functionality to block the use of weak RSA keys that are less than 1024 bits long.

NOTE: Please read the "Known issues with this security update" & registry settings before any actions.

How to disable the Java web plug-in in Internet Explorer.

    Introduction:
Java is a unique form of extensibility because it can be invoked in two ways:

    • By using an applet element
    • By using an objet element that has a CLSID of a Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
These two invocation methods are subject to different security controls. This Knowledge Base Article contains instructions to configure these two security controls through the registry.

Customers can disable Java by setting kill bits for the Java CLSIDs and by setting the URL action to Disable.

NOTE: Those are registry settings, backup before any further action.

System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008.

    Resolutions:
To fix errors that occur when you use Windows Update, install and run the System Update Readiness Tool. The tool scans for inconsistencies on your computer and fixes them as it's being installed. Although it typically takes less than 15 minutes to run the scan, it might take much longer on some computers. Even if the progress bar seems to stop, the scan is still running, so don't cancel the process.

FIX: Heap corruption occurs when a module calls the InsertEntityBody method in IIS 7.5

    Symptoms:
    Consider the following scenario:
    • You create an HTTP module that calls the IHttpRequest::InsertEntityBody method to insert a new entity body into an existing HTTP request body.
    • You register the module on a computer that is running Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5, and then you enable the module.
    • You restart the IIS service, and then a client request is made to a webpage that is hosted on the computer.
In this scenario, heap corruption occurs, and the module does not work.
    Cause:
The issue occurs because of an access violation that occurs when the InsertEntityBody method tries to read the buffer from a freed memory location in the IIS service.

I just got alerted to an off cycle update published yesterday (2012-11-27) - KB2762895.
I installed it without any errors.
Re-boot was not required, but i re-boot anyway...

When you try to install and run certain legacy games or applications, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:
    • The game, the application, or the firmware is installed incorrectly.
    • The game, the application, or the firmware causes system instability.
    • The primary functions of the game, of the application, or of the firmware do not work correctly.
Applications that experience a change in behavior after you install this update

This update fixes an issue in which you cannot install an application on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Additionally, the application uses the .NET Verification Tool (Setupverifier.exe) for the installation procedure. For example, you try to install AutoCAD 2012 and the installation fails.

This issue occurs because the .NET Verification Tool process fails. Therefore, the installation fails.
