Sudden, surprise, demand for activation

Posting this to see if anyone else has encountered this problem ...

Have been running Win7 Home Premium on a machine for several months. Did the rearm thing twice while I was testing it and messing with hardware changes. Once I was done, activated the license online. Checked the properties panel and saw that it was activated.

That was weeks ago.

Then this weekend, booted the machine and got a popup saying the copy was not genuine!

Checked the properties panel -- still showed it as activated.

But, went through the online activation routine using the phone, entered the 30 characters, activation restored.

So, OK, it was easily fixed. But it never should have happened in the first place!

Anyone else recently had to reactivate their legitimate Win7 copy? Or is MS just out to monitor me?

Run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool. This tool will generate a summary of your computer’s settings and system details.

Run the tool.

Click Continue. The tool will scan your computer and display your results.

Click Copy to copy your results to the clipboard.

Paste the results here.

I have seen this happen after installation of the WAT update recently but as with your case there was no obvious cause of it. The activation technology in use is extremely complex and IMO sometimes does glitch. Microsoft covers this by the statement in the EULA that warns that re-activation may be triggered by certain system changes, but without stating what the changes are

1) Many a times, the sudden deactivation of an activated, genuine Windows 7 can be resolved by simply restarting the computer, so that Windows 7 can re-access the activation status. However, as MS explains in Windows 7 displays "Windows is not Genuine" with an error code of 0x80070005, it can also be caused by application of a plug and play GPO. Also, as Barman said, WAT sometimes goes wonky.

2) On pirated versions of Win7, it may happen when WAT downloads new signature updates from MS servers and detects an activation exploit that it was not equipped to catch earlier. Normally, every 90 days, WAT updates.
