configuring updates stage 3 0f 3 message

I have a friend which has Vista, just installed SP1 ( I know a bit behind), now they get a message every time they boot "configuring updates stage 3 0f 3 - 0% complete" After few minutes it disappears and laptop boots into Vista.

I know about the reboot loop issue, but this one appears to boot, just the delay and the message.

The pending xml has been deleted, but the message continues.

I am thinking of installing SP2, but am hesitant to do so.

Anyone ever seen this behavior before? What to do.

Thanks to all who reply.

I would do a system restore from before the update and then try again. It is not installed properly.

What about installing it overtop without the restore?

Or is this risky business?

I am not sure if it would install again, but do not think so. System restore will not touch any personal documents etc.

You may be able to uninstall, but I think that is more risky than SR.

As Richard says, going back to your restore point from before SP1 is your best option. The SP1 installation is massive and complex. Anything could have happened and a "hanging" update is not what you want in your system. But I would do the restore asap before the corresponding restore point disappears. The downside is that you have to reinstall SP1 afterwards. I would download it anew because it could already have been nicked during the download.

Rich has given you the best guidance. I would not try to install it again until I had gotten ride of the failed attempt.
