Just seen this thread How do I reset Windows Update components?

Not sure if that is worth doing in relation to Windows 7? I will dig around further...
The software in the link below is a batch file to perform all those tasks automatically. It's an easier way to fix Windows updates.

Don't forget to check time Time/Date settings on your machines because that will also keep Windows updates from working.

Hi just tried the magic button and it appeared to take longer to try and download but eventually it came up with the same message: -

    "WindowsUpdate_8024402C" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"

Thank you for letting me know about the utility and I guess Vista and Windows 7 are out of same stable so the other link I posted from MS will be worth a try as well.

    Ohh how I love PC's.

    Cheers

OK so I ran the MS supported link fix Vista and it worked in the default mode. I have now been able to download the latest driver for my Network card and I hope that does not break it. On the instructions for the MS link I had to re-boot where the instructions for the link above did not ask for a re-boot so I can not say which one truly fixed the issue. I hope at some point in the future these messages might help others avoid several days of wasted effort.

IMO try the How do I reset Windows Update components? this 1st.

Will now try and see if I can log onto works machine...

BTW Norton 2010 is still installed and I did not have to turn off the firewall.

OK can now connect to works Machine so it seems it was a common problem. Remote Desktop Connection was not working until I ran the fix.

    Time for a coffee...

Thank you for anyone helping and may your google fu be strong for anyone who has a similar problem and finds this thread in the future......
