You might want to check the time/date settings on your machine. If they are off Windows update won't work correctly.

If changing the time does not work try this, it may save the day

How do I reset Windows Update components?

Works just as well with 7.

Try running the sfc /scannow command at the command prompt and see if it finds anything wrong.

MSE updates flagged in Win 7 updates but not XP Mode updates
I find it odd that when I do a Windows Update in Windows 7, the Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) updates are also found. But if I do a Windows Update in XP Mode, the MSE updates are not found. I don't suppose this is controllable? I'd like the Windows Update to find MSE updates.
