I think you can reset the laptop by removing battery, unplugging and then holding the power button for 15 seconds. this will discharge all the capacitors. Then reinsert battery, plug in and turn it back on. See if that resets it.

<Edit: I think this above is also what Bigmck is suggesting.>

Are you getting anything on screen at all?

Windows also creates a restore point before doing the update, so if you are able to boot from the install disc, then you could do a system restore. I hope you are able to do this...

you may have to reset the CMOS in order to get it to boot again. Sometimes forcing a shutdown will lock it up. Not sure why it happens but I do know disconnecting the battery, the power cord, removing the CMOS battery, shorting out the connector to the CMOS battery, then holding down the power button for 10 - 30 seconds will cause the bios to do a hard reset on the next restart, which should solve your problem

its definately not a hardware problem, its a os problem.

get the windows cd and try a system restore?

Trust me, resetting CMOS will probably fix it. It's happened to me before
