Where did my IE9 (64-bit) icon disappear to??

Win7 Pro + SP1 (64-bit). New reinstall from scratch going on for two days now, what with lots of applications to reinstall.

I just noticed that the program icon for Internet Explorer (which is the new IE9 one) has gone "generic". This is true for both icons, the shortcut in the Start Menu as well as the program itself in the \Program Files\Internet Explorer\ieexplore.exe.

Note that this icon ABSOLUTELY WAS PRESENT until something happened (probably today) to make it disappear. I know for a fact that both icons for 64-bit and 32-bit versions of IE were present in the Start Menu.

Also, the 64-bit program itself launches and runs properly from the shortcut. It's just that the icon has vanished.

    and

I've tried to "change icon" on the shortcuts, but the correct IE icon is already selected. This approach has no effect. Still can't recover the icon.

Also, the icon for IE (32-bit) (from \Program Files (x86) folder) is perfectly fine, as the first screenshot above shows. Just the 64-bit program (in the \Program Files folder) is lost.

I obviously can't just re-create the Start Menu shortcut from the program object, because the program object itself has lost its icon.

Please help. Where did that icon vanish to? At the very least, how can I recover it?

Could this have come from a recent Windows Update (to just the 64-bit version of IE9)?

I think not, because "Versions" shows no newer updates other than the original one I installed yesterday:

    Thanks.

There is no 64 bit version of IE 9.
So you should just remove the 64bit one.

    Try rebuilding your icon cache.

Well, while true... this is not exactly a solution to my "lost icon" mystery.

Both of these shortcuts were created during the Win7 upgrade from IE8 to IE9, and they did both have the icon there initially. It's just something that happened sometime today that corrupted or lost it.

Anyway, the other suggestion above... to rebuild IconCache.db... that turns out to have done the trick. I've got the icon back now.

    Thanks.

    BRILLIANT!

    That did it!!! Icon restored.

    • taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
    • CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    • DEL IconCache.db /a
    • shutdown /r

    4. The IconCache.db file has now been rebuilt.

Many thanks for the tip and new information.

    Case closed.

My "about" is identical (as shown in my "details" screenshot earlier). I agree... looks like there absolutely ARE two separate versions.

I am 100% up-to-snuff in Windows Updates for Win7 Pro + SP1 64-bit, and opted to upgrade to IE9 when I was doing my current Win7 fresh reinstall just yesterday, and first opened IE. The rest was done automatically, so I ended up with whatever Windows Updates did for me... including the two different shortcuts.

There certainly looks like there are two different versions of the IEXPLORE.EXE file in \Program Files and \Program Files (x86): (32-bit) - 748,336 bytes; (64-bit) - 754,480 bytes

Yes it is. This is on a clean install of 7 that was installed on this past Sunday. Also when you go to download it there is a 32 bit and 64 bit version, and the 64 bit version installs both the 32 and 64 bit versions.

Also there has been a 64 bit version of Internet Explorer since the release of XP 64 bit.
