Windows icon view resetting Hi, please excuse me if this is posted in the incorrect place.
I have a problem where if I ever change my view in an explorer window it will never stay to what I set it to. It doesn't matter which folder I change, the folder will always reset back to the "Details" view as soon as I leave that directory. I've tried rebuilding my icon cache using this guide Icon Cache - Rebuild
but it didn't fix the problem. I even did a windows upgrade so all system files would reinstall, but again, that didn't fix the problem.
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how I could fix this, I would be more than happy to try them out.
Thanks | My System Specs |

Hello Johnny,
Rebuilding the icon cache will have no affect on folder view settings. Instead, you might see if using the tutorial below to reset all folder views to default, and see if they will stick after being set again. Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default If not, then use the tutorial below to set a default folder template to also disable Automatic Folder Type Discovery and test to see if they stick now. Folder Template - Default Hope this helps,

Thank you for the reply.
The first method didn't seem to have any effect, however the second method now forces Explorer to display the icons with the "Large icons" settings. However, I still cant apply changes. When I do, they will just reset back to large icons when I leave the directory.
I forgot to add in my original post, that sorting also gets reset when I leave a directory. For instance, if I set a directory to sort by date, when I leave the directory and come back, it will reset back to alphabetical order. | My System Specs

Where is the folder located? Is it on an external HDD, library, etc.....?
Folder views are not remembered on removable drives. In a library folder, folder views are shared in all included folders in the library. Change a view in one, and it changes it all in the library. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Self built custom OS 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 & Windows 8 Enterprise CPU Intel i7-3930K 3.2 Ghz (O/C 4 Ghz) Motherboard ASRock X79 Extreme11 Memory 32 GB (8GBx4) G.SKILL DDR3 Quad PC3-19200 2400MHz Graphics Card Sapphire HD5870 Eyefinity 6 2GB Sound Card SB Recon 3Di Integrated Chip Monitor(s) Displays 3x 27" Asus VE278Q Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution Mouse Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution PSU OCZ Series Gold OCZZ1000M 1000W Case Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Edition Cooling Corsair Hydro H100 Hard Drives 256GB OCZ Vector

As a test, create a new administrator account, log on to it, and see if you have the same issue in it. This will let you know if it's just your old account, or a system wide issue.
If it works, then you might consider using it instead and copying any shortcuts, files, etc you like from the old account to the new one. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Self built custom OS 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 & Windows 8 Enterprise CPU Intel i7-3930K 3.2 Ghz (O/C 4 Ghz) Motherboard ASRock X79 Extreme11 Memory 32 GB (8GBx4) G.SKILL DDR3 Quad PC3-19200 2400MHz Graphics Card Sapphire HD5870 Eyefinity 6 2GB Sound Card SB Recon 3Di Integrated Chip Monitor(s) Displays 3x 27" Asus VE278Q Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution Mouse Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution PSU OCZ Series Gold OCZZ1000M 1000W Case Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Edition Cooling Corsair Hydro H100 Hard Drives 256GB OCZ Vector

Thank you this seemed to work. I know you said that it would be easier to just use the other account, but is it possible to fix this issue? I would rather not go through the hassle of transferring all my files.
Again, thanks for the help. | My System Specs

If this just recently started to happen, then you could do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this started. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Self built custom OS 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 & Windows 8 Enterprise CPU Intel i7-3930K 3.2 Ghz (O/C 4 Ghz) Motherboard ASRock X79 Extreme11 Memory 32 GB (8GBx4) G.SKILL DDR3 Quad PC3-19200 2400MHz Graphics Card Sapphire HD5870 Eyefinity 6 2GB Sound Card SB Recon 3Di Integrated Chip Monitor(s) Displays 3x 27" Asus VE278Q Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution Mouse Logitech Cordless Desktop MX 5500 Revolution PSU OCZ Series Gold OCZZ1000M 1000W Case Thermaltake Level 10 GT Snow Edition Cooling Corsair Hydro H100 Hard Drives 256GB OCZ Vector

Unfortunately I never created a restore point. Are there any other options? | My System Specs

Other than setting a default folder view for all folders, not at this time.
