PC Freezes every few minutes, no idea why

Hey guys so my pc right now (2-3 years old) is slow as hell and freezes every few minutes for 1-5 minutes. I just did a clean install 2 weeks ago and it is still like that. Even worse perhaps so I decided to come and ask for some help. I have a 465GB Hard Drive and 230GB of it is currently free (I am making videos with my friends and we have a gaming channel on youtube what is doing pretty well right now so 150GB is taken away by videos. I delete them right after making them so most of the time the Hard Drive has 380+ GB free)

Also if this matters than I should currently be dual booting my win 7 with ubuntu but 1 day the ubuntu folder from my local disc was deleted (I have no idea how, 1 day it was just gone) and since then it doesnt let me choose to go into ubuntu. Is it completely deleted or some parts still remain and is there a way to uninstall/delete those parts.

This is all the information about my computer (I think) I took that from speccy so probably there is alot of information that is useless for you but still.

Hello Kritosein Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You are correct about Speccy in that a 500gb drive generally see 465gb available once it is partitioned and formatted. That shows 488gb? A better program would be System Info for Windows. But we can get into that later.

One of the first things you can try to see things clear up is scheduling a run of the Check Disk tool as well as a good run of the memtest memory stress testing program as long as your system temps are found to be good. Something overheating won't help anyl When right clicking on the C drive's icon in Windows Explorer to bring up the properties screen go to the Tools tab and click on the Check Now button under error checking to schedule that for the next boot up.

If you using the Grub loader to boot into 7 that can produce errors on the drive at times and why you would want to try that option. Memtest is always a good one for finding out if you are running into any memory problems from a defect with a dimm which can also cause freeze ups among other things.

As far as your ubuntu folder was that for a virtual hard drive project (VHD) or were you looking for a folder you downloaded an iso image into? You will need to be a little more specific on what you mean by folder.

As far as videos being on the main drive temporarily the present case was planned out with that in mind seeing a 1tb host drive for 7 to allow plenty of drive space. Then you add in some virtual machines(VMs), other types of temp and long term files kept locally on C adding to that further by numerous programs.

Why I say drive errors from dual booting is having run into that here where a dual boot of 7 with the Release Preview for the next version to come Windows 8 resulted in first seeing 8 lock up for no apparent reason when arriving at the desktop and subsequently 7 as well until running the Disk Ckeck for the 7 drive and all is well!

The second OS drive was set as the default with a boot entry for 7 added into the new version boot options and once 7 was loaded from the 8 startup the problems began! A previous 7 install before a fresh install of 7 went on saw an entry for 8 added in temporarily however since the clean install of 7 was a little over due.

Hey Night Hawk, thanks for your reply. I did not understand much what you said because I am not very good at computers and it's terms. The ubuntu folder came like this: There is a downloader on ubuntu site that is specially for windows and you download that, you select your options what you want, and it downloads itself, and installs itself. All you have to do is press download and reboot. The problems started a long time ago before ubuntu was installed. Ubuntu I installed after the clean install 2 weeks ago. And that was the first time I have dual booted. I will try to run the Check Disk tool and other tips you said. Thank you!'

edit: The folder was where ubuntu was located, it was 30GB so I think that was ubuntu. But that is not the problem anyways, I just brought that up as more info but it is gone anyways now.

how much airflow do you have going threw the case? have you taken a can of air to the the computer to blow out all the dust from the fans and heat sink, cause looking at your temps they all seem to be around 50c at idle so that would make me think under heavy load i am sure they are getting to hot. so i would first say get a can of air open the case up and blow all the dust out of the case, fans and heat sink... and see if that helps..

We clean the computer every month or so, right now it is pretty much clean from dust.

Are you using a stock hsf on the cpu? Another thing which is good besides a good heat sink/fan is a front intake fan on the case itself as well as overall room temps.

Now that the original hsf is back on here since I had swapped out brands of memory when first building the present case with dimms that sat higher and pressed up against the underside of the hsf forcing the use of a substitute hsf the temps weren't down where they should have been. Despite getting all the dust out the dust screens were found to be hampering the intake of cooler air!

The 48+ cpu temps seen weren't the cause of freeze ups however since the cpu was operating at temps you would see when using a stock sink! High 50Cs into 60Cs is a real problem no doubt. The drive errors found due to the dual boot and seeing how things would go loading 7 from the 8 Release Preview boot options proved to be a hinderance resulting in both seeing freeze ups. When that started in 7 the Check Disk option bailed 7 out with a single run!

Besides drive errors and any possibility of a defect with memory another thing to mention here is what has been seen on previous builds only a year old where the lithium battery on the board was weak and needed replacement! When the system failed to power up on separate occasions with different builds that was why! It also had explained why sudden restarts were being seen while you were busy doing something and reboot time!

The list so far includes checking the drive for errors and even running a hard drive diagnostics tool would be another tiem. A good run of memtest as well as considering battery replacement usually a DL2032 for Duracell or another brand with the "2032" number in it. You can grab those at most retail stores that carry calculator and watch batteries. (Duracell or Rayovac preferred over Eveready for long battery life!)

And of course looking at seeing lower temps as Monster212 pointed out is always a good idea! Sometimes adding in a single case fan can be a large help. Here it was the Antec 900-2s dust screens dust free and still hampering air flow that saw the 46-49C temps drop right down to the 35C expected idle temp for the 125w quad core cpu here. With a good load it might go up about 2-3C at the most.

The first things however to look at would be to rule out any hardware issues. Generally after 2-3yrs. another thing of course is the time to simply call the present Windows install "toast" being too cluttered up for both drive and system registry and call it a day for a clean install of 7! I went a full 2yrs. here from May 2010 restoring a system image in Oct. 2010 to insure the image integrity and continued running with it until the end May 2012! Drive wipe time!

And I pushed 7 to the limits but it was time! I had everything on the previous install and 7 still ran good all that time but was starting to slip.

Oh my god... I really think this pc is a waste of time and deserves to be destroyed. Now my screen started "malfunctioning" too. That might be a problem caused by a game (It only happens when I try to start that game but I could run the game perfectly before and I have done absolutely nothing since that) Whenever I try to run the new Ghost Recon Future Soldier my screen goes black for 5seconds and then goes into sleep (I believe it is sleep..) Also I scheluded the disk check and after that my computer didn't freeze at all for about 2 hours, then the problems started again.

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 especially establishing a Clean Boot, using the free lightweight AV and tools for maintenance, test your hardware now, check the logs for repeat errors and utilize the built-in System Resources to find solutions.

Also compare the steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 which are same for retail, with what you've done to date.

That right there shows there were numerous errors on the drive but wasn't able to prevent the same from returning. I recommend going for the WD LifeGuard diagnostics tool along with a good run of memtest since faulty ram as well as drive problems if any would be pointing at a hardware problem.

The freeze ups seen with 7 here were after a full clean install on a brand new primary lately having dumped a 2yr. old 7 install when first building the case here. The cause however was strictly OS related when booting into 7 from the Windows 8 Release Preview boot screen! But the errors were cleaned up in one run of Check Disk being software not hardware related.

There on a single OS machine either your 2-3yr/ old OEM install is in need of a full wipe or something has now come up on you. Let's get the hardware side confirmed or ruled out.

The WD Data LifeGuard Diaagnostic for Windows will test the main drive for faults since you have their brand in use there.

The bootable iso images for creating a memtest live cd are available at Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

Umm I'm at step 4 right now and well it says to google the IDs but I have 1206 errors/warnings there... there are many different IDs is there a way I could maybe somehow post the error log here and you could tell me something about it?
    '
Edit: ;MBytes didn't find any viruses either. I performed flash scan and short scan/Small scan. As soon as soon as the Data LifeGuard Diagonostic for Windows stops performing the extended test I will perform a clean install with steps from Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and Clean Install Windows 7 then I will run memtest and redo all the other suggestions you have given me and see if the pc still fails.

Oh but 1 more thing. Is there a way to fix the problem that whenever I try to run Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier (CanYouRunIt said that I can run it on minimum) then the screen goes black says something like "Power saving mode" and my computer crashes and the only thing I can do is reboot. My monitor is Flatron L1972H if that helps in any way. Also may that crash be because I put all the settings on max? At first I could play like 2 hours on max and no lag, nothing. But now I cant even start it (I got the game yesterday). As soon as I do the screen goes black and "power saving mode".

    Thanks.
