I always wipe any external HD backup crapware off the HD using Diskpart Clean Command.

It seems it wasn't only the internal HD that needed wiping here.

    Back up Software?

Yes the BU drive came wiith the seagate and Memeo software which seemed to work ok, except for...
I also have Acronis Home True Image 2012, which is supposed to be very good, but it's not very user friendly.
What Back Up software do you good people out there recomend, if I wipe off all the "crapware"?

I like Acronis best. The manual is easy to understand so you might wanna give that a read.

I only use backup software for imaging, however. For data I simply drag my active User folders to external. You can schedule SyncToys to do this for you.

The modern method is to sync your active User files to the cloud. Skydrive offers 7gb free storage for each Windows Live ID. I sync them by moving the active User folders to the Skydrive folder which has caused no problems here: User Folders - Change Default Location

Be sure to make the boot disk which doesn't expire and runs fine itself for almost all operations.

Acronis has two services which I don't like to keep running when it's installed to the OS. But they are easily disabled in msconfig>Startup and >Services.

    Success...and a solution!

Apologies for the delay in replying, but...

I've now disabled the seagate and Memeo software that came with the Goflex BU unit, which includes the seagate dashboard service, and now all is working perfectly, PC starts up shuts down and the non OS SSD is fine.
Best of all the three spare HDD's which includes the old OS still loaded, all spin down and stop, when nor being accessed, and spin up when asked for, so all is now good.
The next issue is to install some BU software which works with the Gflex, as my True Image 2012 has expired, perhaps the new TI 2013, BU software not to complicated and system demanding, can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks to all, those contributors so far, kudos will follow...

If you don't require the flexibility of reimaging to another location than the exact same position on the HD then you can use Win7 backup imaging: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
    System Image Recovery

If you need more flexibility and would like to try freeware the most recommended app here is Macrium - Image your system.

If you have any WD or Seagate HD's in the mix then you're entitled to use the premium Acronis free version which comes with each, which can be downloaded from the Support Downloads webpage for your model HD.
