I have tried these two remedies but neither worked.

    Hello Mitchell,

This appears to only be happening with your URL shortcuts and not program shortcuts. Possibly their favicons got deleted if the temporary internet files were deleted.

    Do they still work?

As a test, make sure that Internet Explorer is set as your default web browser with all of it's associations set to it to see if the shortcut's icons return after opening them.

If you like, you might create the URL shortcuts using Option Three in the tutorial below. I find the icons are more stable than the favicons from the other methods.

    Thank you Shawn
I suddenly thought, as all the links worked, why not just open each one (there are only 6) drag the icon from the front of the address and place on top of the shortcut on the desktop. You then get the option to Copy and Replace. This puts the icon back. Took less time that it took to write my first post. There goes my policy of thinking twice and posting once! Will see how they hold up but I must say I am not one for sitting and looking at my desktop hence I never use fancy themes or Aeros so long aas the desktop functions that's all I ask!
Will bookmark your post in case i need it in the future, thanks again.

I don't know if related, but here sometimes all my desktop icons became the same generic picture you show then slowly the intended icon is loaded across all shortcuts. I don't know why...

    Hello Derek,

For that, rebuilding the icon cache may help. :)
