    Win 7 Home Premium Error 0x80096001 after replacing Motherboard & CPU


    My 5 yr old old motherboard (HP w/AMD Phenom chip) bit the dust a week ago. Luckily, I had kind of prepared for it by having a comparable one on standby: Gigabyte EP45T-U3DLR W/Intel Core 2 Duo E8600 (Wolfdale). In the end, I can't seem to shake off this error message: 0x80096001. I'm Using Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with 8 gbps ram. This was on the previous machine when I purchased it, so I never received an actual Win 7 disk. I ran System Restore, then grabbed Malwarebytes and ran a scan. It found (and supposedly cleaned) some 28 or so bad guys. Read a few more forums, then got UXStyle Core Beta. It tells me it had to bail prematurely because my theme subsystem (i.e. uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll) had been tampered with. Incidentally, I cannot load a theme.This is when I decided to become a SevenForums guy. Any help out there? Oh, Graphics card is NVidia Geforce GTX 460,

    Unless its the exact same model mobo it can't be expected Win7 will start up on different hardware. It sometimes requires SysPrepping it in advance, or booting an Adaptive Restore CD like Paragon Adaptive Restore freeware to adjust the old install fully to the new HD.

    Sometimes running a few Startup Repairs from the disk after confirming Win7 or its 100mb SysReserved partition (preferred) is still marked Active willl also do the adjustments or in this case repair system files which may have been damaged by infection.

    However in your case with an infected system if it continues to error out (or even if it doesn't) then I'd follow these same steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

    During the booted install using the latest official installer for your licensed version, be sure to delete all partitions to create new or just click Next to let the installer do it for you and begin, from Steps 7 and 8 of the illustrated tutorial for the Clean Install Windows 7
