    Now, while everything is good, make an image of your system drive and save it to a spare drive/partition ... forewarned is forearmed!!

    I just had the same thing happen to me. However, the System Repair fixed the issue for me.

    Just go to System Restore and let it do its nuking and then your laptop will have a better life! ... Unless you want to save the files but that would be impossible!

    Not impossible to copy files out of unbootable Win7: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

    System Restore can also be run from the Win 7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD, as can the Startup Repair. But Factory Recovery is done from a separate set of disks made off the Recovery Partition, or by running the partition itself using the steps given in the Manual on the support downloads webpage for your computer model.

    As this thread is very old, I add this to the archive since it is obviously getting Google hits and posts where confusion was sown.
