For backup, take look at those tutorials:
Best to backup to a external HDD.
    System Image Recovery
Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
Restore Backup User and System Files

    For OEM manufacturer's PC's.

       Information
We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.

& made the Startup Repair CD.
    startup repair disc-create

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

You can order OEM Recovery disks from your OEM manufacturer's website.

For Windows 8 take a look at are Windows 8 forum:

    Hi,

Since you want to try Windows 8, but not risk a problem with your current Windows 7 installation, you might also consider installing and running Windows 8 in a virtual machine. Use one of these tutorials to show you how to do that:

VMware Player - Install Windows 8 Consumer Preview - Windows 8 Forums
VirtualBox - Install Windows 8 Consumer Preview - Windows 8 Forums

you could also install windows 8 as a dual boot.

I would not delete or overwrite your WIn7 as Win8 may do if you run it from within Win7.

What I would instead do is try virtualizing it and if that is not successful, shrink C partition to install it as a Dual Boot as I have done and not returned to Win7 since.

You'll need to download the ISO from boobah's link above, burn it to DVD using WIndows Image Burner, then boot it to install to the space you shrank from C.

I`m tellin ya, don`t do it. You won`t like it. You have a perfectly functioning pc now. It`s not worth it.
