The Upgrade process within Win7 uses Anytime Upgrade so it is relatively quick and offers little risk for file loss: Windows Anytime Upgrade - How to - Windows 7 Forums. You can use a retail Product Key or Anytime Upgrade key (cheaper).

However files should always be backed up to another location in case of HD loss or fire.

You get 7gb free storage with each Windows Live ID on Skydrive - which now offers upgrade to 25 gb free!
