Persistant bootmgr problems
Hi all
I am currently having some very frustrating issues with the Windows 7 installation on my new PC, I cannot seem Windows to boot from my SSD (where my fresh windows installation is).
I have done a fair amount of reading on the topic and it seems alot af people get this problem but none of the recommended fixes have worked for me.
I figure I will go into the history of my install as there are some specifics to be aware of.
First off I had my bootable USB stick with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 ready to go, after getting past an error at the start of installation (cd/dvd drive requiring drivers, unplugging my USB drive from the USB 3.0 port and putting into a USB 2.0 port solved this) I came to another error in the setup phase of installation.
Where it prompts you to choose the drive/partion to install windows on, I could see any of my three drives no matter what order they where connected/booted, but every time I tried to select the drive for install I would get the following error:
'Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing one'
I tried the following with no success:
-Deleting listed partitions and formatting at the selction window (SSD and HDD).
-Running diskpart and cleaning, formatting, setting as active etc (tried this multiple times, on the SSD and HDD).
-Doing the above and trying different boot sequences.
I ended up giving up on this and done the following:
Took the HDD from my other Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PC, put it in my new PC and put it first in the boot sequence.
PC started up and I then used my USB installer to install Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PC on my SSD.
After the installation had completed, I restarted my PC and everything works well. It prompts me to choose what Windows 7 install to run on startup, they are both labelled as 'Windows 7' so it is hard to differentiate, but I assume the top one that is already highlighted is the first one in the boot sequence (HDD).
Startup time is extremely quick so I am confident that it is booting the SSD install, I thought this was wierd though, as boot sequence dictates that the old installation on the HDD should be the one to boot (as it did before the new installation on the SSD).
So next I changed the boot sequence, putting the SSD in front of the HDD, I save settings and restart.
This gives me the 'bootmgr is missing' error, and prompts cntrl+alt+del to restart.
I have tried the sytem recovery method and used the bootrec tool to attempt repair (I have done both multiple times)
I know this is very long winded and the topic is covered alot, but maybe with the way I did the installation the fix may be different.
Any insight into this problem would be appreciated. I don't know whether to keep persivering through trial and error, or just live with it for now, as it seems to be booting fine in the end. Its just the having to select what installation to run everytime on start up and the fact that my boot order is messed up frustrates me a bit.
