Post 1 : Remote Desktop v Startup apps

I am looking for a decent remote administration application for Win 7 64bit, I have 4 systems running I need full and total control from wherever I am and that includes the internet via a NAT portal.

My requirements are driven by

a) How Kaspersky Internet Security works

If Kaspersky puts a prompt or pop up on the screen you can not select any actions or clear the prompt using either Radmin or Remote Desktop and are forced to go to the console itself to 'acknowledge', in fact some of its pop ups aren't even visible to a remote session, Kaspersky think this is acceptable - I do not, but the chances of me getting it changed are pretty much zero, you CAN manage Kaspersky using UVNC

I have tried many other Internet security options, I'd prefer to use ESET Antivirus in conjunction with Agnitum but ESET proxies everything through itself making Agnitum virtually useless, Agnitum still doesn't obey user rules and blocks pass through making the use of VMWare a nightmare, I am not interested in McAfee, Trend Micro or Symantec

Bottom line is Kaspersky is staying so I need a remote desktop client that can deal with its console issue but am not particularly happy with UVNC, it is slow, clunky and not really up to date enough for W7 operation in my opinion

b) How Remote Desktop works.

Remote desktop works extremely well, the interface is clean and fast, it does everything I need but the inability to access the console session from any application that is terminal services based is a weakness in my opinion. I know why Microsoft did it but not everyone needs their hand held, they should have left the option there for those that want it. People and Microsoft can say what they like you can NOT access the root session anymore, Kaspersky's pop up and prompt behaviour proves it, if I could manage Kaspersky through it then it would be the access method of choice

My issue is three fold with Remote Desktop.

The first is that it fires all the startup programs for every session that is opened, I have tried all ways to stop this but any apps in the startup group get triggered for every session - since two of these apps are actually VMWare virtual machines this is a huge problem. I got around the registry 'CurrentVersion\Run' elements by moving those apps to a system user but this gives elevated privileges to apps that I would much rather did not have them.

The second is that I still can't deal with Kaspersky using it.

Restarting / rebooting from a remote desktop session is a pain in the hole

Currently I use UVNC as a remote app, I used to use Radmin but it can not deal with Kaspersky and I also got tired of their draconian activation methods (yes I have legit licenses but they provide no way to transfer them or de-activate, they tie them to hardware so it if changes you are forced to re-activate, I am not interested in this kind of BS). I tried PC Anywhere but it too can not deal with Kaspersky.

Can somebody answer the following.

1 : Has anyone managed to find a way to access console (session 0) using remote desktop Google doesn't provide any answers. Shadow 0 simply results in a 'the requested session can not be controlled remotely' error, in any case you need to connect before you can issue it and the damage is already done by then.

2 : Can anyone speculate what method Kaspersky are using that is preventing anything but console access working? yes I have tried turning off self protection but it doesn't work, in any case I don't want self protection turned off, if I at least had an idea why remote desktop can not see the popups etc I think it would help.

3 : Does anyone know of a better app than UVNC. Although UVNC works it is a little dated and very clunky on W7 64bit - the cursor and speed is terrible, the screen update doesn't impress, I don't mind paying for a decent product. I clearly need an app that is not based around terminal services and can bypass the session 0 restrictions imposed by Microsoft.

4 : How can I stop the 'startup' applications and also items from the 'Currentversion\run' key in the registry getting started for every session, these apps must run only once (since one is an E-Mail server and the other a Web Server, each with fixed IP addresses) you can imagine the network chaos starting them more than once causes). I do have the 'multi' user fix in place, it doesn't help.

I have but I am not prepared to use paid for bandwidth via an external connection to connect to PC's on the same LAN, I still don't entirely trust the motives of any company providing such connectivity for free either. I do actually use it sometimes for WAN access where uVNC will not work.

It seems that the easiest way to do surveillance on people these days isn't to go to court, you just give them heaps of free E-Mail or 'offsite storage' etc etc then they will give you everything without even asking. How many scream about invasion of privacy and then go on to use Gmail, facebook etc etc

There is no such thing as a free lunch as far as large corporates are concerned, there is a motive there somewhere ....
