Remote Login question

I have never done it before. Is there a tutorial? I know how to go to remote desktop, enter the IP, and log in.

My girlfriends parents want me to be able to do that, as they have no idea how to do anything on the computer. I will be at there house tonight. Do I need to configure their pc (running win7 premium HP) to allow incoming connections? How do I do this. What will I need when I go there, what info from my pc, when I restart their pc, there is no log in, so will I not have to log in if I remote in?

Just want to know how to allow the incoming connections, and what I will need from my pc, what info, and what I will need to do so I can help them when needed. I am running win7 pro 64 bit

There is a much, much easier way. Team viewer (a free app) is so simple it is bullet proof and easy to use.

Thanks, I assume it has to be downloaded onto both computers?

I tend to install at least two methods of connecting to those that I support. This let me update the remote control software using a remote connection
For example: I use LogMeIn (free) to connect to a remote computer and then update Teamviewer. Teamviewer needs to be shutdown in order to make these updates & I have Teamviewer set to not allow the user to close the app... so I kill it by stopping the service.

Also, the web based interface to LogMeIn is nice when Teamviewer is not installed on the computer that you happen to be sitting at. Like when you get a call for help while you are at a friend's home - no need to install TeamViewer just so you can connect and help. Just fire up most any browser on most any OS.

You might also look at https://join.me/ I've used this at times when I want to install Teamviewer on the remote computer. I just talk the other person thru running that join.me tool on their end. [According to a whois search for join.me - it is owned/operated by LogMeIn.]

Teamviewer also has a free smartphone app. If I have a 4g connection, I can remote into another computer and control it while talking with the remote user. As you might imagine, remote control of a computer via a phone is a bit slow due to the small phone screen, but it works well enough and you can always opt to just "see what they are seeing" to talk them thru stuff. [Join.me also has a smart phone app, but it is view only the last time I used it.]

For folks that "have no idea how to do anything on the computer", I use CamStudio on my computer to record the actions/steps that I'm taking on their computer... (like how to download an attachment from Yahoo's e-mail) - then transfer that video on their desktop for them to refer to when they forget. I also write the steps out for them.

Teamviewer has a recording feature built in - but it has too many drawbacks. CamStudio (and other tools like it) are much more flexible than Teamviewer's.

Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) is also good - but it will not work for you (if I'm understanding your post correctly) The remote computer is W7 Home Premium - correct? It cannot accept a remote connection. RDC also locks the remote screen, which is not so good if you are attempting to walk the remote user thru some process... all they see is a locked screen.
