It's true, I left that part out, windows easy transfer will not copy programs, but it /will/ copy their settings in a lot of cases and certainly the settings for your current windows programs you use.
I would not use easy transfer to transfer say folders of your photos you may have on the windows drive. As others have said, copy that stuff off yourself. Use the easy transfer to transfer your user account and IE/Mail settings, stuff like that. (You are given a list of things you can select from)
Otherwise you will have to hunt down all those settings and save files yourself. The location of which depends on which OS you are currently using.
But for either method, the very safest thing to do is to install on a new hard drive (The purchase of which can then get you the much cheaper OEM version of windows if you wish, making the drive actually free!)
