Solved Image your system with free Macrium

I have previously used Drive Image on my win2000/xp machines. What I have always done is put an image on the internal HDD, differet partition, and restored from there. This can usually be done in a few minutes after booting into caldera dos. But of course DI will not work with ntfs.I find this method extremely useful after modifying/trying out new programs/problems etc etc.

Will Macrium allow me to restore my win 7 machine in the same way. Unfortunately my C drive is about 13Gb which I find, contrary to what a lot of peope think, much too big. I do not want to wait an hour or so to restore - my DI solution on my desktops, which have C drives <3Gb, mean't I was never down for more than 5-10 minutes max.

I alternate. Every second image goes to a partition on an internal HDD, then the next one to an external disk. The image I took this morning from my Win7 C: ( 13.2GB used) took 3.40 minutes. A restore from the external disk took 20 minutes (have not yet tried from the HDD). And that was without prior image verification. With verification, the time doubles.

I used Macrium on Vista, but now use 7's options. No point installing extra software when Windows does everything you need.

So I can restore from the internal HDD directly - If so does it do this by installing its own dos, like drive image when booting up ?

How big would an approx 13Gb C drive compress to and can this be made into 1 bootable DVD ?

Thanks

You can restore from an internal HDD provided it is from a different partition, better even different physical drive. An image of a 13GB OS footprint is a little over 6GB (which would not fit on a DVD). But the recue CD fits on a cd or DVD. You should burn that first because else you cannot recover.

Making recovery disk with Macrium

With all do respect, you sure brushed by the making of the the Recovery Disk.

I just went through the process and they gave two options: Linux and BartPE.
In Bart PE they mention XP which i was using to make an Image. I had no idea what BARTPE was all about, so I used the Linux option.

After reading i have some idea about BART, the fellow said it took 2 days to make a BART disc. No thanks.

Question : do you feel my image disks will work to recover my XP system ? I tested the Recovery disk and it asked for the vital data to proceed. Also the individual disks report the Macrium image in the proper order. i didn't go any further...
Your help would be welcomed. thanks

Thanks very much.. did you test the linux ver. with XP? The reason I ask because in Bart they mention " if you are using XP" ... just a little confusing.

I tested with Win7 and Vista. Not XP (I have no XP), sorry. But why don't you test it if you have XP and report back.

No need to experiment with your system and data. Go and image a "non vital" partition or drive on your XP system and then reload it. I always keep a "testing partition" around, just for that purpose. In the picture it is the "Extra Partition F: ".

Have just made an image, with the free version, to my internal HDD in a separate partition.

A few things:

I tried both medium and high compression and the difference for a 14Gb C drive was only about 300Mb - so hardly worth doing

I am currently, I think, making an image to an external DVD. However it does say via a popup that it should be a re writable cd/dvd. Mine is not and it still appears to be working - Would this be correct or does it in fact require a rewritable dvd?

My transfer speeds are slow compared to Drive Image, which I cannot use, approximately 150-180Mb/s compared to 900Mb/s for DI. Are these speeds normal and is there a way to speed it up

Thanks

there's a good idea.... never considered it. I'll give it a try after i rest from all these images.( We spent a wonderful vacation in the black forest and southern Germany. I should have the language my parents did....... As you know Florida is a second home for Canadians. )

Sorry I cannot help you here. I never use CD/DVD to write anything. I have 6 external disks and an extra internal disk drive that I use for that. The idea having to a bunch of CD/DVDs around scares me - with my sense of order - LOL.

I am glad you had a good time in the Black Forest. I hope the weather was nice. You would not want to be there today - weather is dismal as I hear on the German webradio. Can't beat Florida this time of the year, although right now it's a little nippy too - in the 60's F.

Have just completed a DVD image on 2 disks but after changing to the 2nd disks it gets to 100% and says Saving Index but the DVD just continues to spin and there are only 2 options on the dialog box Hide and Cancel - How long does it take to Index and if I cancel is it all wasted? It has been in this state for about 10 minutes

Thanks

You are getting a real life lesson in why DVD backups are a pain and can be problematic. Unless you have an over-riding reason to back up to DVD, I would avoid it and stick with hard drives. You can buy a high quality drive for $50 that would certainly store a lot of images.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to put an image on the same hard drive as the source, even if it is on a different partition. If that drive fails, your image is not likely to be accessible. Use a second internal or an external.
