Solved What's blocking Google search from being added in IE11?

This is the third time on three different installs that I try to replace Bing with Google search using "Add Search Provider" but in Gallery once it is selected Google will not allow adding - the button does nothing but sit there.

This has happened in both Windows 7 and 10 for me. On one when I went back the next day it added, but two others (including just now checking my IE11 on Win 10) it won't budge.

Any suggestions?

Worked fine on my new install,, worst comes to worst, just set the homepage to Google.

And install Chrome :)

I don't use or recommend Chrome which like all Google programs and signed-in sites is spying relentlessly, building profiles that paste interest ads everywhere you go, even on your TV, eventually billboards that will change when you approach. ;)

No other browser allows this and actually block Google from spying when it is selected for their Search box.

This makes me think it is some kind of standoff between MS and Google.

They say its an Update that blocks Google from being set as default Search engine which is surely what most people want.

I can't imagine why MS would not want us to use the Google search engine!

I'll try that fix.
 
Just checked and I have the same problem. I almost never use IE though so reading your post prompted a check.

Ran Powershell to confirm that the update is installed. Currently removing it.

Removing the Update solved the problem after reboot.

Need to find out what that Update is for besides blocking the most popular Search from IE. Are they getting desperate for more $earch $hare?
 
Same for me. After removing the update and rebooting I got this when launching IE:

Got it the first time I launched both IE 32bit and 64bit. A relaunch and no such warning!

On another note a subsequent check for updates has (so far) found 13 important updates that need to be installed and no sign of the removed update on the list. Well I checked Windows Updates earlier and there wern't any so these 13 updates suddenly appeared after removing KB3038314.

I very rarely use IE but checked under search providers and I removed Bing, but it said Google could not be set as default.

I did a couple of searches and Google is the search engine, so it is confusing.

I also never had that update that was previously mentioned.

Right click the drop down arrow on the right. Do you see the Google logo on the left?

Re: Blocked website.

It seems that Xvirus Web Guard didn't like the "Fiddler" that's installed on my machine. It just blocked it on first launch of IE but subsequently allows. Must be a bug in Xvirus Web Guard.
