    Something else to try:

    Backup emails first: MailStore Home – Free Email Archiving and Backup for Home Users - can run from flash drive.

    Remove your existing account from Thunderbird (note account settings first)

    Reboot then re-add your account using these settings:

    Thunderbird and Hotmail | Thunderbird Help

    I'm currently on v52.1.1 and everything seems much better now.
    I don't know the cause of the initial problem and why it no longer appears to be an issue. I'll wait and see.
