Can't right-click to open new tab in IE8

Apologies if I've posted this before. I thought I'd posted it an hour ago, but now I can't find it on the forum. Here's my query again:

When I do a search in IE 8 and then right click to open a hyperlink in a new tab, I get 'Connecting...' but it never connects.

I've trawled the web looking for solutions. So far I've:

- disabled all add-ons
- opened IE8 in No Add-Ons mode
- turned off Windows search in Services
- started in Safe Mode
- turned off Avast and Windows Firewall
- run regsvr32 actxprxy.dll in an elevated cmd prompt
- run the list of regsvr32 re-registers suggested by KnowOne in http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/27436-internet-explorer-8-bug.html
(Three of these would not run; I got an error message saying 'the module shdocvw.dll was loaded but the entry-point Dllregisterserver was not found. make sure that [file] is a valid dll file and then try again.')

Whatever combination I try, IE won't connect in a new tab - unless I follow one suggestion I found and click in the address bar and hit Enter. Then it does connect.

I can't find anything else to try. The one thing I'm not prepared to do is a clean install of W7 x64 - because I've had this problem since the day I installed the retail version, two months ago. That was a completely clean install. (I didn't have the problem in the RC or the beta.)

Are there stones I've left unturned?

Mary

Try removing IE and reinstalling it.
Type "Turn Windows Features" into the start box, and click on Turn Windows features on or off. Find The IE box, and uncheck it. Reboot your machine.
From there, you have 2 options: Either download IE directly from Microsoft and install it, or follow the instructions above, this time checking the box.

Middle-clicking doesn't work for me.

I just tried turning IE off in 'Turn Windows features on or off'. After rebooting, the check box was already ticked again.

Next I'll try downloading and reinstalling. But I can't find a Win 7 x64 version on the Microsoft website; it just offers me Win XP or Win Vista 64 bit. I assume I download the Vista version?

Problem solved. I discovered that I've been using IExplore 32-bit - goodness knows how that happened. I certainly didn't make a decision to use the x86 version - indeed, I thought I was using x64.

In the 64-bit version right-tabbing works fine. Thanks for your help anyhow!

I realise this is an old thread, but..
I am having this same problem on a new install of Win7 x64 Home,
It does work running x64ie8, however, not all addons work in 64bit.
Which is why on my win7x64Pro box I dont run x64Ie8, and I never had this problem with tabs not connecting.

Also regardless of uninstalling ie8, the icons never leave the start menu, and the program always works after clicking on it.. after uninstall / reboot .
re-installing from windows componets never reverts any changes to originals, not that I made a bunch. Just simple things like maing the start page blank, and turning off the acclerators.

Anyone have any new information on this problem?

thanks.

Hi. Has anyone solved this for Win7 64-bit? Microsoft remoted into my 32-bit machine and fixed this back when IE 8 support still existed. Now I am seeing the problem on my week old 64-bit PC. As I remember, there were about two dozen DLLs that had be re-registered and some other wizardry to make it work.

Use the scroll/middle button on your mouse to click on a link. It should open in a new tab.

Thanks for this solution been frustrated with it for days. Not only opens a new tab (clicking on links before always opened a new window) but the new tab is the same color as the one I clicked from. Hallelujah!!!:D
