    After critical update: missing CI.DLL

    Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

My wife's notebook installed 2 critical updates today.. But after the last reboot, it wouldn't boot all the way into Win7.. It stopped and said 'loading files' or something I usually don't get, then it said the computer would not start normally.. By reading the diagnostics, it said C:\CI.DLL was corrupt or missing.. I pulled the hard drive and put it in another machine and verified CI.DLL was there.. I scanned the HD with malwarebytes and found some unrelated web spiders and such, but cleaned the whold hard drive..

I put it back in, but couldn't get it to boot.. I'm now trying a system restore..

Why would a critical update do this?

Once I go back to an older point in time, am I OK to install the critical update again?

Absolutely only I would run one update at a time. That way you have more control over it. You might even see which update caused the problem.
