Oh and I just proved (to myself) that I can restore a backup of my C drive using Macrium....

KAKTUSSOFT my SINCERE thanks to you for your suggestion. i was wondering about whether I should apply a BIOS update after the error exclamation mark against my Marvell SATA thingy the other day (on my motherboard I have a Marvell SATA 6GB port for the SSD and an Intel SATA 3GB port for the spinning drive) and I tried to flash my motherboard with a USB but the Asus flash program wouldn't recognise my USB stick.

The SSD is AHCI and the spinning drive is IDE. It never occcurred to me that the SSD might somehow have become marked as IDE but I just found this article, number 8 that says if AHCI is marked, try changing to IDE, and occasionally the other way round. "Occasionally" is exactly what happened - the BIOS setting for my SSD was set somehow to IDE. I changed it to AHCI and have successfully booted up to my (reimaged) Windows 7 doesktop, and all my personal files are on the spin drive partitions exactly as they were this morning. Thank you very much indeed for that suggestion, it would never have occurred to me.

How To Fix STOP 0x0000007B Errors (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE)

Only two questions remain - what caused the BIOS to flip, and should I go about updating BIOS and/or Marvell driver and if so, how?
Most likely the flash succeeded (?) Or was reset by you(?) Or it reverted to default(?)
What is the error code in device manager, so why is the exclamtion mark?

Device Manager - Finding Unknown Devices
    Copy the Hardware IDs value.

What's the hardwareID of the device with exclamation mark?

I never succeeded in flashing the BIOS as the memory stick wasn't recognised (despite trying itas both FAT16 and FAT32).

Under Device Manager I have an explamation mark against two things: USB3 driver saying it lacks a driver (code 28; I have the driver, but haven't installed it, as previously it was buggy even after installing and I don't currently use the USB3 ports of my PC).

And against the Marvell ATA Device, which I assume is what connects my SSD to the motherboard? Again the message is, no driver installed (code 28).Would it be advisable to ignore this or to try to install it? As it's the driver to my OS disk I'm a bit wary of doing anything that might annoy it.

    Hardware IDs as follows:

    USB3:
    PCI\VEN_1033&DEV_0194&SUBSYS_84131043&REV_03

    Marvell SATA:
    IDE\ProcessorMarvell_91xx_Config_____________________1.01____

I see it's listed as IDE though I set it to AHCI (because I thought that was what I was supposed to do when installing Windows onto an SSD) - does that signify anything wrong, or is that just what it normally says? To be honest I was a bit confused when I installed my SSD as there are six SATA ports in the Intel controller and two SATA ports in the Marvel controller on my motherboard: should I install both SSD and spin drive on separate controllers, or both on the same one, and should they be IDE, AHCI etc. I think the SSD is AHCI (that's what I just reset it to and it's booted the PC up fine now) and I think the second, data drive is IDE though I can't be sure and I don't normally go tinkering around with BIOS. But clearly if you install WIndows onto an AHCI disk it won't work if the disk is subsequently treated as IDE (or vice versa).

Does that get any further in what if anything I should do next?

Not a problem at all for now

You have no driver installed and still SATA is working. It looks like you have a working sata controller. And one which has no drivers. It's not the driver for ssd... otherwise ssd won't work.

Open device manager again. Expand branch IDE ATA/ATAPI-controllers. Any good working SATA drivers there? Marvell ATA Device is also listed there?

Make a manual restore point System Restore Point - Create
Is system restore enabled on correct disks after the image restore you did?
rightclick the marvel in device manager and uninstall. shutdown. In BIOS set MARVEL in AHCI mode as well (it's safe and not used now). Reboot and check if disks work.

Under IDE ATA controllers I have the following:

    ATA Channel 0
    ATA Channel 0
    ATA Channel 0
    ATA Channel 1
    ATA Channel 1
    ATA Channel 1
    ATA Channel 2
    ATA Channel 3
    ATA Channel 4
    ATA Channel 5
    ATA Channel 6
    ATA Channel 7
Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller (would this be the controller for my SSD?)
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller

All seem to be working fine, they all have Microsoft drivers and all appear to be described as working normally.

Should I try to update the Marvell controller or not given this?

are for IDE ... maybe DVD/CD drive?

Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller and all ATA Channel x stuff is SATA so for SSD (and maybe internal spinning disk)
