The exploit modifies the system in a certain way that may make troubleshooting difficult, because the modifications are not known. The consequences of the modifications regarding the behaviour of the system are also unknown due to the various of possibilities. To get rid of this problem a clean installation is required.

The thought that a counterfeit Windows 7 DVD is better that a original Microsoft DVD with Windows 7 is just plain silly. That boat don't float.

Use this tutorial by Brink, using your Microsoft DVD and the COA key that it came with.

I've installed the counterfeit version twice and the original twice over 8 months - the boat does float :)

Anyway, problem solved - faulty blue sata cable to main hard drive. Swapped it out and no more problems after 12 months.
