Random BSOD, video card is probably the cause

I just recently did a major overhaul of my system replacing everything aside from my video card, PSU and hard drives. I also went from Windows 7 RC to a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium using upgrade media. I had no problems at all when running the RC, however I'm getting blue screens that always involve atikmpag.sys. Here's my system as it is now:

    Core i5 750
    GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2
    2 x 2 GB G.Skill DDR3 1600 RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 4870
    Corsair TX650W

I have never had any issues with this card before. I've tried a number of things to fix this issue (re-installing catalyst drivers, updating mobo's BIOS, setting PCI-E freq to 100Mhz) but none of them are working, and google isn't turning up any answers. Anyone have any ideas what I could do to try to fix this short of getting an Nvidia card?

Welcome and glad you found Win7Forum.

I have read others having the same problems after loading the latest drivers
    Version 10.1
At the moment the only solution is to install version 9.12 which works.
This will get you going until a new fixed driver arrives for Win7

Thank you for the suggestion. I rolled back to 9.12, which seemed to be working. However just now I have had another BSOD, only this time atikmdag.sys comes up instead of atikmpag.sys.

Its still you video driver. Are you overclocking? un-install the current driver and install a fresh copy. It might also be a heat issue. Download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) to keep an eye on the temps.

You might also want to run a system file check to verify and repair system files
type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>SFC /SCANNOW

All the crashes have occurred when I was running stock speeds and voltages. I checked my card's temp and it was a toasty 75C, but I'm not sure why. Every other time I checked the temp in the Catalyst Control Center it was around 40C at idle. I set up some profiles so now the fan is spinning at a decent speed and keeping the temp around 42C I don't think it's due to overheating though because the crashes more often than not happen when I'm just browsing. I've only had one crash while playing a game.

As for the system file check, I ran it, and a command prompt popped up for a fraction of a second then closed. Is that what is supposed to happen?

Also, here are the minidumps from the two most recent crashes. The most recent is with the 9.12 drivers, and the other is with the latest Catalyst drivers.

    Thanks for the help.

    Hello Welcome to SF,

Its an issue with your Display card. Make sure the Latest drivers are installed. If you think it has Overheat open up the side of the PC case (be mindful of any relevant warranty conditions!) and point a mains fan squarely at the motherboard. That will rule out most (lack of) cooling issues.

Follow this link for additional information on your Error https://www.sevenforums.com/crash-loc...eshooting.html

Also you could run a Stress test on your Card follow this link FurMark: Graphics Card Stability and Stress Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net

    Code:
    VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (116)
Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.
    Arguments:
Arg1: fffffa800418e4e0, Optional pointer to internal TDR recovery context (TDR_RECOVERY_CONTEXT).
Arg2: fffff880068c2ef0, The pointer into responsible device driver module (e.g. owner tag).
Arg3: 0000000000000000, Optional error code (NTSTATUS) of the last failed operation.
Arg4: 0000000000000002, Optional internal context dependent data.

I don't think it's due to overheating. While running Prime95, the highest any of my cores reach is 45C, which is higher than I'd like, but from what I've read it's nothing to worry about. I also ran around in the Bad Company 2 beta for a bit, and my GPU's temp leveled out at about 70C, and during the stress testing with FurMark, it climbed into the low 80's (I only had my fan speed set at about 30% so I'll increase that in the future) but still no crash. I also ran two passes on each of my sticks of RAM in MemTest and no errors came up.

I know it's probably a difficult question to give a definite answer to, but does anyone think that just doing a re-install of Windows would have any significant chance of clearing this up?
