Today is Australia Day - its nice and sunny at 29 degrees.
Today is Republic Day of India .... as on 26th January 1950 our constitution came into force .
I was wondering that, Dinesh. Being a Salman Rushdie fan I've read the Midnight's Children several times and one of the key things in that book is India getting the independence on 15th of August 1947, so I was wondering why you guys have changed the date you celebrate
Kari
Actually India got independent on 15 th January 1947 , but it was the Government of India Act 1935 which was the replaced by the Indian constitution on that date .... accompanied by the end of the dominion status .
At least according to the available information, India's declaration of independence is dated 15th of August, 1947. Republic of India was then formed two and a half years later, 26th of January, 1950, meaning India has independence day on August, and Republic Day on January.
