How do I turn off auto-arrange in file folders?

There is no auto-arrange check option when right clicking on a folder. Where is the turn off auto-arrange option? I have to be able to manually arrange the folders and not sort by any names, numbers, dates, etc., or group. I need the turn off auto-arrange option.

right click on desktop
view
auto arrange icons
there should be a little symbol next to it just click it and the symbol should go
and your free to mess up your desktop woo

You can't do that for folders in Explorer, only for the Desktop. The feature "let me move icons around the folder and remember how I arranged them" is gone from Windows 7. No amount of registry hacks is going to bring it back.

I can't believe that option is gone, I need this for my work!!! I have to go back to XP for one lousy file folder option???

the only way is to change the icon size and it auto arranges it for you
but im nott sureee

I know I can arrange them by size, number, type, etc, that is not what I need. I have to be able to move them manually and have them stay where I put them without them snapping into place. We're talking about hundreds of files in each folder that have to be ordered and grouped manually and not by any of these listed criteria. This is too crazy, I can't believe they took that option away.
