Windows 7 beta seems not to be compatible with this controller. I'm trying to perform an upgrade from Vista Business 32-bit. Setup tells me:

The following issues are preventing Windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

  • [*] For these items, make the following changes:

  • Install updated drivers for the following devices. Open Control Panel and search for "update device drivers".

    • [*] Storage controllers: Adaptec SCSI Card 29160 - Ultra160 SCSI
When I open Device Manager and select "Update Driver Software" for the controller, it searches and tells me that I have the latest driver for the device (Adaptec driver v6.5.645.100). The controller and driver work fine in Vista.

Well, I solved the problem by downgrading the driver in Vista to an older version before performing the upgrade to Windows 7 - I replaced the Adaptec v6.5.645.100 driver from 2007 with their v6.2 driver dated from 2002. Once I had done that, Setup ran successfully as an update to my Vista installation. No idea why an older driver should work and not the newer driver (both from the controller vendor). Nick

Adaptec driver v6.5.645.100 are 64 bit drivers not 32 bit, as far as I know. v6.2 drivers are the most current 32 bit drivers.

That's definitely not correct, as the 32-bit Vista that I upgraded from was using the 6.5.645.100 driver.

Prior to purchasing a Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade for $220, I downloaded and ran the compatibility/upgrade adviser tool and found no problems.

While running the Windows 7 Install disk, the installation stopped dead with the message that I must update the driver for my Adaptec 29160N SCSI hard disk storage controller. However it could not find a newer driver than the one I am currently using under Vista, version 6.5.645.100, dated 1/31/2007.
