Thank you, thank you, and thank you again.
This was the final thing I did to make it work. I could hug you right now, but I'll be far to busy playing KoToR in a moment.
For nVidia users, this is what I did:
First, to set affinity for only one core (Massive stability improvement, though I havent tried using all cores after downgrading drivers)
1) Downloaded imagecfg.zip:
(Simple google search)
(this is a utility for permanently setting an affinity) and:
a) Unzipped imagecfg.exe into the C:\Games\LucasArts\SWKotOR folder
b) Ran cmd (Start -> Run -> type "cmd" (without quote marks) and press Shift+Enter (to run it as an administrator!)
c) Navigated to C:\Games\LucasArts\SWKotOR (cd C:\Games\LucasArts\SWKotOR)
d) Ran: imagecfg -a 0x1 swkotor.exe
Note: More info on imagecfg.exe: http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=187768
2) Created the new shortcut for swkotor.exe (right click on swkotor.exe and Send to -> Desktop - Create a shortcut) and renamed it to Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic.
THEN
3) Download and install 178 version drivers from post I quoted above
4) As soon as I ran the game I found the video very shaky, and went to graphic options to disable v-sync
5) This got me through character creation easily enough, with perfect stability (DO NOT SWITCH THROUGH FACE PROFILES TOO QUICKLY this can cause it to crash)
but as soon as I got into the gameplay, the lines and shakiness were back. Switch Anti-alliasing to 2 and Anisotropy to x2!
Haven't had any problems since, but I will post again if I do, and with a solution. Please start reading the entire thread before posting problems, so that this post won't be buried like paintonasign's.
Weird. I saw Weird on account I didn't have any issues, other than one, with KOTOR and my Windows 7 system, 64 bit. IT ran fine, no crashes no goofy video problems.
What may be different than what is in this thread is I got my copy of Knights of the Old Republic via Steam just
a couple weeks ago. I'd never played the game before and figured for 2.99 American Samolians it was worth a shot.
Maybe the steam version fixed something? Shrug.
The ONE issue I did have with the game was a niggling problem that caused my character to be unable to
move (the starting character) unless something on screen was clickable. I almost gave up on playing it
when I discovered it has to do with the numlock toggle or was that capslock. Anyway, it seemed to fix it
mostly but the problem would recur at times.
OVerall the game ran fine on this system.
Again, maybe it is the steam version that 'fixed' something and allowed me to avoid all the issues I see posted
on this thread.
Or maybe it was just vastly superior computing skillz.
not.
I was actually very close to trying the Steam version, but I didn't want to A: sign up for steam and B: pay even 3 dollars for a game that I already owned and had trouble installing, but now that you have said that it seems worth a try.
As far as the random immobility, it happens on my copy as well so it seems to be universal. I never made a connection to num-lock or capslock, but I will post when I find out more about it. It mostly happens post-combat or after non-video cutscenes for me.
This is the fix that worked for me.
Symptom:
--Crashes, mostly when there were lots of graphics effects, usually at the end of combat (on-screen, or even when a party member made a kill out of sight)
The main character still locks up (won't move) sometimes, but selecting another character, or a save/reload, fixes that.
Thank you, Vashdakari.
Yeah so last night I tried installing kotor 1 on my relatively new pc. I use a 40" samsung hdtv as my main monitor and and acre 17" as a secondary. The game installed and technically it loads up ok. My main issue is that I only see the top left portion of whatever is supposed to be on my screen, such as only seeing the top left corner of the lucas arts logo and the main menu of the game. From what I read here I might be able to fix the crashing issues at the startup but I need to know how to fix this odd display problem of mine.
If it helps my graphic card is an evga gtx260 and the os is windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Any help is greatly appreciated
This may sound weird, but I had heard of an easy cure for this problem ( crashes on the elevator, freeing your companions etc.. ) couldn't remember till just now. It always happens when you're pushing buttons on a console or such. Instead of clicking your mouse, move your mouse over what you want to click on and use the enter button on your keyboard instead. Somehow clicking the mouse causes the crashes, at least for me it was. I was crashing on both freeing my companions and the elevator, and this got me past both. Good luck.
@ doosezwild - It helped for me to simple alt+tab out and in of the game. Then it would go fullscreen without further troubles.
I have the Steam version of KoToR, tried to launch it with all the crashes that are described in here. Using the fixes posted at KOTOR 1+2: Vista Fix & Windows 7 Report - LucasForums didn't help at all. Just made the game ask for the original cd.
Reverting nearly everything back to the Steam installation, I just ran the swconfig from the mainfolder to set my screen resolution, then I simply rightclicked the swkotor.exe and choose "run as administrator". No problem at all after that.
The only change is the line "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" was moved to the end of the "[Graphics Options]" list in the swkotor.ini file.
Running smoothly on my Radeon 5770 for now, expects it to continue as long as I just remember to manually launch the game with admin rights every time.
EDIT: I have found it to not always initialize properly, it might take up to 7 tries before the game launches without crashing. When the game first is up and running, then I haven't experienced any problems at all.
