Old games, new Win. How to?
How can I make good old Monkey Islands run on my 64bit? Do I need to make a VM, or is there a way to make do without one?

It should be noted that there are two "newer" Monkey Island games on Steam
Secrets of Monkey Island (1)
Tales of Monkey Island (5)
Steam Search
If they ran on Windows XP, you can try to install & play them on compatibility mode.
To install an application in compatibility mode:
Right Click File > Properties > Compatibility Tab > Check Use Compatibility Mode, Select OS from drop-down
You an also check with the manufacturer to see what OS their games would run on.
If they're supposed to run in XP mode but don't through compatibility then youj can download XP Mode from Microsoft if you're running Professional or Ultimate.
Download Windows XP Mode
If none of that works, you'll need to install a VM and Install the windows version you need.
What is this xp mode?
I'd like to have the older ones, the secret of monkey island and the lechucs revenge running.

Edit: When I try to run them, they say they don't comply with OS, even when run in compability mode. Trouble comes from 64bit version, I believe. Can this xp mode change this, and if not, can running a VM do it?

In order to use/install XP mode you must have either Window7 Enterprise, Pro, or Ultimate. Here's an excellent explaination on XP Mode and how it works. Win 7's XP Mode And VirtualBox: When You Need Windows XP : Introduction
You could however try....
14 - Compatibility Mode – Compatibility mode allows older games or programs that worked under earlier versions of Windows to run in Windows 7 (maybe). If you find you’re having a hard time running or installing the game, give compatibility mode a try. See this tutorial on running in Compatibility Mode.
See my Troubleshooting Game Issues guide in my signature for more tips as well.
Good luck.
xp mode has no directx support, you would need to use virtualbox i think.
Please check this link - What XP Mode Is...And Isn?t : Win 7's XP Mode And VirtualBox: When You Need Windows XP
Perhaps you mean it has no hardware-accelerated 3D in Windows XP mode?
XP Mode DX Properties...
However I would still recommend Compatibility Mode over XP Mode for gaming.
