Most of the main services will not start?

Hi Guys

I'm running win 7 Ultimate 32 Bit, which has been fine up to a couple of days ago when on start up reaching the desktop I started getting a window saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute." it would then restart and continually loop this way.

I booted to safe mode and had no restart message, so was able to run a virus scan using Microsoft security essentials, however if I booted to safe mode with networking the restart window would show again.

In an attempt to fix I booted using "Last known working boot".

Now when I boot in safe mode or normal most of the main services will not run?

Can anyone point me in the right direction as I’m pretty new to windows 7?

Many thanks

Happy.

can't see Gbp Service running, however, when I had previously booted using last know good startup from the F8 menu this stopped most of the main services from running, which cannot seem to fix.

So I thick I need to some how get these services back running before I can fix the restart issue?

Many thanks

Happy.

opened the services window, most of the services are showing disabled, I clicked on Network Connections and had to go to properties to set it to manual before I could try and make it start, once I clicked start got this message "Windows could not start the Network Connection Services on local computer" "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start".

Note: as most services are not starting my default, there is not network (internet), no sound and I can only get the classic theme for the desktop.

If this was XP, I would do a repair installation, but I beleive that is not possible with Windows 7?

It is possible, and I would advise you to do precisely that, because the situation looks and sounds hardly recoverable any other way.

Didn't know you could do that! :-)

However, having tried after I click install it copies the temp files needed etc and then I get a message saying "Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer".

Could this be because some services are not running needed to carry out the installation?

Though It boots to desktop and I can open C: drive and view the files.

Any further ideas?

Many thanks

Happy.

I have now manually set all my services to automatic and now the system will connection to the internet and have sound etc.
However in doing so I have the "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute." issue back. I looked in services before the system auto restarted for Gbp Service, but could not see it in there.
As I did not have this restart issue while most of the services were disabled, looks like it will be one of the services that is causing this restart issue, but how to find which one?
If I can find this services and diable it, then the system may allow me to run a repair installation.

Is there no way to doing a repair installtion in safe mode or even boot to the CD, like you could do with XP?

If anyone could suggest which services to disable or advise if there is another way to do a repair installtion, that would be great, as I really don't won't to have to reinstall all the programs, emails and settings again.

Many thanks

Hi Guys

The problem is now fixed, after trying all the things suggested (thank You!), I created a Windows Repair CD and booted to this, this then allowed me to do a System Restore, but this advised it had failed, however after restarting the restore had actually worked? Thus removing the restart alert and allowing me to connect to the internet.

I ran further virus and spyware scans, no virus's found, but there were a few spyware, which were successfully cleaned.

System now in perfect working order again! :-)

Thank you again everyone!

Happy.
