Can Windows Search "auto search" be turned OFF???

I may be the only one on earth that does not like windows search [in 7] as it fires off at the first keystroke, wasting time/energy afaik.
is there a way to turn it off so that I can get my proper search string entered, then hit the key??

It shouldn't be causing any issues or slowdowns by searching right away. All it's doing there is accessing the index.
