Noel,
Yesterday I had to re-start eight times before I got a good start (one where everything was as it should be). Before the good start, I made a zipped CBS log and stored it on an external flash drive. The reason I did this was because for some reason I was logged in with a temporary profile and any files created would be erased when I log off. I also checked the properties of my hard drive. It showed the proper used amount even though the PC acted as a new install and the files etc appeared as non-existent (empty). I will attach most of the 12-1-13 zipped CBS file as again, it was too big (10.5595MB)without removing one of the persist files. I moved that to the flash drive also in case that is needed to be sent as well. I hope this additional info helps. Thank you
Booting ro a temporary profile indicates major problems with the existing profile - but shouldn't delete anything. It will simply not be easily accessible, as each profile has its own storage area.
For a system that's had that king of history, there are amazingly few errors in the logs - although they end on 1/12
I'm a little confused by one set of errors....
this was followed by a reboot, during which the driver install rolled back.Code:2013-11-30 19:22:15, Info CBS External EvaluateApplicability, package: Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514, package applicable State: Installed, highest update applicable state: Superseded, resulting applicable state:Superseded 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Trusted Installer signaled for shutdown, going to exit. 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Shtd: Prepare for shutdown processing. 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Shtd: PreshutdownTimeout: 3600000ms, BlockTimeIncrement: 900000ms 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Shtd: progress thread started 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Starting shutdown processing in TrustedInstaller service. 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Blocked system sleep; prior state: 0x80000000 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Shtd: Begin shutdown processing. 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Shtd: Entered process lock. 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Disabling LKG boot option 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Shtd: Initializing driver operations queue. 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Shtd: current ExecuteState is CbsExecuteStateStageDrivers 2013-11-30 19:22:16, Info CBS Free disk space check on C:. Run SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker now up to 3 separate times to see if it will resolve the errors, if necessary from Command line. SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot
Try creating a new User account to run under to see if it resolves the problem. User Account - Create
If so then later you can delete the old User account.
Unfixable System Files often are resolved by a Repair Install
You would save time by doing a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
Reply to Noel,
You will have to bear with me a bit if I ask too many questions as I'm not very knowledgeable with the technical aspects of the workings of the PC's software. You mentioned my booting to a temp profile. The PC did that by itself. I don't even know how to access 'my' profile. That being said, I guess that would partially explain why on a bad boot, everything is there (not deleted) but not accessible and the folders showing that they are empty. As to the log and the errors, it's mostly Greek to me as I don't comprehend hardly any of it. Except for this one:
Info CBS DriverUpdateStageUpdates failed [HRESULT = 0x800700b7 - ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS]
I notice that two KB's are referenced in this. KB 2862152 & 2862335. Even though it keeps coming up as needing an install, 2862355 was previously successfully installed on 10-9-13. 2862152 never did install.
Is there a way to fix this already existing error? How do I access my profile?
The reason for: "For a system that's had that kind of history, there are amazingly few errors in the logs" may be the fact that I have two PC's and the one giving me these problems is my back up PC (#2). I don't use this one too much but keep everything on it up to date. Most of my usage is on my main PC (#1). Hope this helps a bit.
I just noticed a reply from Greg that I will have to address. I am posting this in the meantime and will report back later. I'm currently on PC #1.
Thank you both.
Check your date and time on the computer.
Lower right corner. If the date and or time has rolled back all kinds of goofy things will happen.
Windows Updates should give a trouble code for a mishap like this but who knows.
I will get out of the way and go back to watching.

Layback Bear,
Yep, I remember that the time was one hour behind. In a little while I will go to PC#2 and poke around even if I have another 'bad start'. I will check out my user profile(s) and also re-run SFCSCANNOW. The SURT has been run 5 times so far.
Booted PC. Had a bad start. Installed 2 updates KB2862355 & KB915597. 5597 was installed and 2335 was not perhaps because it was installed successfully on 10-9-13. On re-start, another bad start. Checked profiles. David (administrator). Guest is off. Created administrator DAVID-HP. when switched to DAVID-HP another bad start, the clock had correct time but FireFox had no history (it's sync'd to the other PC), 'C' drive shows 483GB used even though all files and folders show as empty. Re-Boot - bad start 7 times. on 8th boot I finally had a good start with everything as it should be :).
Updated Avast & Spybot. Created CBS, Ran SURT again for 5th-6th time. Ran SFC/SCANNOW and it found no integrity violations. Please note that no matter which profile was used I sill got bad starts. Also, I made a mistake telling Noel that KB 2862152 never installed. It was successful on 11-3-13. Sorry bout that. I will attach the new CBS.zip file after I cut it down to size.
I'm going to need some help on the CBS Files. I seem to have them in different places and I think some of the older ones were combined with the latest one. I don't want to screw things up. Would it be ok to delete all of them and do a new one? I am attaching a snip so you can have an idea of what I'm talking about. One of them is just below the recycle bin and the others just above OpenOffice.org

You can delete CBS logs anywhere other than in C:\Windows\Logs - they will be copies.
The only ones we need to see are in that folder.
