So, it fails AFTER the updating, every time, but not BEFORE the updating? IF so, try clean reinstall and then do not do any updates -- and see if you can reboot that repeatedly without problems.Bare in mind that all three times I had done the same thing which was reformat the drive, and install the OS, and then updating it.
Also, you said originally that you could enter safe mode just fine. Did you try that when these failures were happening?
In my experience, the No Operating System typically signifies file system corruption -- which, admittedly, is unlikely for a new drive, but you could try running a Check on the "C" partition just to see if it detects any filesystem errors.
