    Creating an autorun file

    I can't figure out how to set up an autorun file. Does the file have to reside on the CD or DVD itself? Can it be on a thumb drive?

    Hello elawhomey10, :)

    You will still be able to use an autorun.inf file on a CD/DVD or USB flash drive to specify a label or icon for the device. Using an autorun.inf file to run a file on the device when the device is connected is no longer supported though for security reasons.

    I hope this helps some.

    Thanks, Brink. I don't understand. Do I need to put the autorun file on a thumb drive? Or does it have to be on the CD or DVD itself?

    Thanks in advance.

    You can place the autorun.inf file in the root directory of either USB/CD/DVD you prefer.

    The tutorial links I posted above can help give more details though.

    Thanks. I have an example of an autorun file

    [autorun]
    open=setup.exe
    icon.ico

    I don't know what the open file should say or the icon statement either. I looked hard for the answer but couldn't find it.

    Thanks for your help.

    You wouldn't be able to use the open=setup.exe code anymore since it will no longer work.

    You could use this below for the icon though. The .ico file would need to be on the USB/CD/DVD along with the autorun.inf file.

    Code:
    [autorun]
    icon="icon.ico"

    I put the autorun.inf file on a flash drive and tried to play a music CD.

    I tried:

    [autorun]
    icon="icon.ico"

    But it didn't work, so I tried:

    [autorun]
    icon="Thumb_Drive.ico"

    I do appreciate your help.

    Good info here:

    You can do some nifty things with autorun.inf!
